One Year Sober on the 17th

Hey all, thought I'd check in and mention Wednesday the 17th will be one year sober.

I try to appreciate each day, and I think of 365 as a bit arbitrary.

Nonetheless it's the first time I've been free of alcohol and other intoxicants a whole year since 1996, and not for lack of trying. I made it to 5-10 months sober prob 10 times, and I tried 12 step, rehabs, therapy, diet, psych meds, etc etc. Not to imply that these things didn't help, but I guess in the end it comes down to whether one can avoid picking up.

This time, along with my overall holistic approach to health, I have been on a low dose of antabuse since December, which I will probably continue for another year or so. I'd stay on it for the rest of my life but unfortunately carbon disulfide, one of Antabuse's metabolites, is associated with a fourfold increase in Parkinson's and Vascular disease even in non-alcoholics, so it's a tradeoff.

I don't get urges frequently, but they have come up once or twice when I was at live music events around people drinking, and the Antabuse did help me resist. I wouldn't have attended the events had I not been on the Antabuse bec I knew I'd face temptation. Even after I stop taking it daily, I plan to keep some on hand so I can still enjoy live music without worrying about relapse.

Anyway, that's all for now, good luck to you all!

-Joel

Thanks Joel, I appreciate you sharing this. I'm coming up on 10 months here shortly myself, and it helps me to see guys like you who are crossing the 1-year mark. I also find your honesty about cravings to be helpful - I am very much aware that this gift of sobriety can be quickly taken away if we don't stay on track. Thank you again and most of all congratulations!
