my dad died
my dad died
Hi, My dad died last week. He drank a lot and smoked for a few decades. The smoking seemed to directly lead to his death, and I assume the alcohol also hurt his organs and partly led to his death.
It's been an odd week. I had not had contact with my family for years, but I have reconnected to them now that he is dead. I have lots of differing emotions about his death. It's led me to think about how alcohol has influenced my family (including me not being in his life). It just seems so sad. So much lost to alcohol and abuse.
May he rest in peace now.

I long time ago, he raced cars. Going to the racetrack was one of my happiest childhood memories. He raced and rode motorcycles too. He'd love the motorcycle image!
Dying from alcoholism was very hypothetical until he died. His death just brought home to me that we are all going to die and that how we live influences how we die.
Do what you love doing.
Thanks Zencat, Dee, and opivotal! It just helped writing about it. And the racecar driver smilie makes me very happy.

Sorry to hear about your loss Oak, it's never easy to lose a parent. He'll always be a part of your collection of memories though. A lot of wisdom in what you said above :

Bless you Oak, I hope your able to seek peace and comfort in the memories of you Dad.
I lost my Pop's as a late teenager. I was ripped apart of his passing. Although Dad was a sober man except for a little 5 oz bottle of brandy that he drank once a year as he went deer hunting. I became the lush of a boozed druggie the next day he died. Pop's would not have approved of my behavior all those decades I stupefied myself daily.
For me Pop's, my hunting and fishing bud...these smileys are for you.

Oak, so sorry for your loss. My mom passed away in '08, I had been estranged from my family for 10 yrs at the time and her death also reunited me with my family which I am sure would have made her very happy. I hope you just keep remembering the fond memories of your dad.
