Confidence is High

This is my tapering week. Since Sunday night, it has been a bitch; shakes, sweats, chills, anxiety attacks, insomnia, and when sleep does come, the most bizarre dreams ever. (If you see Daphne from the Scooby-Doo cartoon, tell her she can keep the whip, I just want the keys to the cuffs.)

Perhaps foolishly, I am managing my own detox. I am not offering or asking for medical advice, just letting you know where I am. I know it can be physically dangerous and is emotionally difficult. This morning confidence is high, but tapering is such a tricky place. It is so easy to back-off for a few days, feeling like you really moving toward your goal, and then say “screw it” and take off on an epic binge. Anyway, Friday is the day I’ll give this another shot. Meditation, self-hypnosis, exercise are my primary tools to get the goal of freedom from addiction – Ultimately all addictions not just ethanol.

I have been reading lots of posts here, and I am very happy to see the level of caring and thoughtful discourse. Hopefully I can contribute. I am a little surprised that there is not more of a discussion of the neurophysiology of addiction, and alternates to disease models of addiction. If these topics are a bore, inappropriate for this forum, or has been discussed to death, let me know and I will shut my pie hole ;) Would a blog be a better place to discuss these topics?

Sincere thanks for the links. I found the detox experiences enlightening. I am going to sound cocky, but I have planning this since April. I have been monitoring my pulse and blood pressure regularly during this period, and I have working on my nutrition for months. If circumstances were different, or perhaps if I were braver, I would check into a rehab center. But I know what would happen if I did that - I would be in relapse within a week if not the day I got out. The why of that is complicated, but I know my decision making process, if I did the rehab center thing, it would have been something “they” did to me. All the reasons I flop from addiction to addiction would still be there, and while I am not all that honest with myself, I know I would not have changed, just sobered up.

If it helps mitigate the cocky bit, my big plan was to begin July 5, but the thrill of getting away with a series of escalating binges and a bottle of oxycotin has wasted most of my summer. We will see if I take the final step to begin the journey this week.

The easy way is to go to the page you want to link too and copy the ULR and then past it in your reply.

Recycle, the reason you don't see more discussions on the alternatives on the disease model here is that most of us agree! We work Secular Recovery programs, and generally prefer to discuss how our recovery itself it going than spending our time breaking other programs apart.

Welcome!

Heavens, I was not talking about bashing other programs. Anything that works that doesn't hurt anyone else, and doesn't just replace one addiction with another I am all for. I am very interested in neurophysiology and how activities such as meditation, prayer, strong emotions, etc, are proving to change the actual physical structure and function of the brain.

Perhaps it is a vain hope, but I hope to restore some of my mind and body someday, and not feel broken. You know what they say, hope springs infernal ;)

Thanks for the welcome. This is an amazing community in all forums.

(Wow I feel good this morning, I have been up since four, it raining, the roof just started leaking, and the cat just puked, I have no complaints.) :)
