Am not doing the God thing well

Am trying to figure out if the Secular section of these boards is the most appropriate place for me to be in begining my recovery. Can someone offer me some links or guidance that can help me decide if this is the best section for me to be in? Thank you.

hi,

glad you found SR and glad to see you post here....

I think only you will be able to determning the best fit for you in SR, and i find that i wander around the different areas as my needs change and stuff.

I sent you a quick pm and will try to see if we can chat later :)

I would say read a little in defferent secions each day to see where you feel comfortable posting that day.

again glad you are here :ghug3

If you wish to discuss 12 step related recovery, then this isn't the forum for that. However, there is also the secular 12 step recovery forum. That forum seems to be tolerant of different views. The drawback is that that forum doesn't get as many views as the "Substance Abuse" and "Alcoholism" and "Newcomers" forums. You can probably start a journal in any forum, including here, and you'll get lots of support. Btw, most of the posters here on SC are atheist or agnostic.

Welcome :)

I agree with Ananda - I post different things in different sections depending on what I'm posting about, and find it very informative to read posts from a variety of different boards.

Please feel free to ask any questions you have about secular recovery. There is a great group of people here on the secular side that would be willing to help.

Welcome to the forum, i personally think we can learn from all forms of recovery. I class this section as home, it does help.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone. I don't have a clue what secular recovery is so if someone could touch on that for me it would be helpful. I think it's obvious that regarding my God belief that I'm in the right place, but I don't know how to proceed regarding recovery.

My recovery is SR, therapy, going for walks, taking pictures, getting enough sleep, etc.

It's not exactly structured, but it works for me. If circumstances change then I'll modify what I'm doing. I want to keep it fluid.

@ AD

'Secular recovery' to me is using common sense, a bit of reality checking, surrounding myself with sober folks, engaging in sober fun, and avoiding certain people/places. SMART offers useful tools for recovery as well.

'God' and a HP concept can be helpful for most in recovery, but for me it is largely irrelevant to my mental and physical recovery from alcohol.

I consider myself a very spiritual person (a belief in universal connectedness and shared experience)...but I don't see that (or a belief in the traditional 'god') as being necessarily intertwined with living a sober lifestyle.

But by all means, if you find that your faith in an HP or god helps you be sober, then use it to your advantage!

Zencat 06-12-2009 08:20 AM

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and SMART Recovery as my primary addiction treatment plan. Also Buddhism, particularly meditation helps lots with urge stopping as well as with other cognitive distortions. I an also finding I can integrate HP concepts within my core non-theist belief system.
