Thanks DK, all good points there about some of the common misconceptions of atheists. :)

Anytime I let someone know that I don't believe in gods, 9 times out of 10 I get a bewildered look and a "Why?"

Usually I avoid engaging in conversation because it can be a touchy subject....I understand this somewhat because when I was a believer, I felt threatened by non-believers. What the atheists and agnostics said made sense at the time...but I was too scared to take it in. I think I was in denial for quite awhile.

It feels good to be able to talk about this here...I haven't been able to talk about this with anyone.

yeah ive avoided the subject if anyone asks me because of the stigma associated with it

Well, all ten are false. Very false.
This is, largely, an american artifact. Atheism is commonplace in Europe.

A belief in God is largely automatic thinking. many just believe it. In the USA, a person has to go against the grain in order to be an atheist.
I just keep quiet.

I do find it strange that being an atheist in America is such a big deal, its just not really a problem over here unless you are extremely militant about it, take a bow Richard Dawkins, lol.

Although I did read that David Attenbrough got hate male from creationists after doing a documentary about Darwin, whats that all about, the mans a national treasure!

Ive got to say that since I left school (Catholic which explains a lot about me) the only really religous people I have met have been in aa, most church goers I know do as a social thing rather than out of any strong sense of belief.

Spend some time over here and it will make sense...well, it doesn't make sense to me...but........trust me......many people here frown upon it big time. :(
