I heard part of a radio interview today where he admitted that he still has the 'occasional' drink. IMO, that means something complete different to someone like me as it would to a 'normie'.

This is the only thing I have ever heard that is more insane than alcoholism itself.

It will be interesting to see how this proceeds.

I'll stick with my 12 Steps and being happy, joyous, free and sober, but there may well be more research with direct brain intervention.

.
I'm not concerned at all with the first use of this Technology, nor the first Patient's use/misuse of it.

The potential of this is remarkable. Just as studying Body Motion has led to new Athletic achievements. Just as we now can see MRI Scans in real time 'light up' Pleasure Centers in the Brain. On and on...

What this could do for conquering Addiction is very promising.

I am glad his solution is working for him. I am glad my solution is working for me. I am all for whatever works for an individual. The goal is to get out of hell by any means possible. If the vehicle used a 1957 Studebaker or a Koenigsegg Agera RS, it is all good.

Part of the collateral damage from my alcoholism was a pretty battered self esteem. In addition to my alcoholism, the solution I chose has helped to heal my self esteem along the way as well. I can't help but wonder if that would be the case if I chose a medical solution. I will never know but am curious as to whether my self esteem would have been battered even more by the fact the medical solution might have made me feel like a spectator in the recovery process rather than a participant.

Before I found sobriety, my sister brought up the idea of antabuse as a solution. The words that came out of my mouth still amaze me to this day, because I know they didn't come out of my head. I said that would be a band-aid, not a solution.

Yeah, I don't see why people are upset or judgemental about this.

There are many "medical" procedures that work for some and not for others, not just for alcohol abuse. We are sentient creatures and can choose what we want to use to achieve our goals.

There is a Patient #1 for everything. It's a start. If it saves one person, right on.

This guy has saved thousands of lives and made thousands of others more livable.

IMO if medical science can help him all the better.

And, longer term, this medical intervention may become part of our tool kit for helping people with alcohol use disorder, given his willingness to try anything.

My Dad was bi-polar. He took drugs. Others do electric shock. Still others like Stephen Fry chose to do nothing.

At the end, the fact is that we have so many choices in treatment for people with bipolar disorders for which there was NONE 100 years ago, which is amazing.

For me, same goes with alcohol disorders. The more ways we have to treat it, the better.

Similar I guess to people who use things like liposuction to lose weight rather than work at diet and fitness.
