"Sharp Objects" - Amy Adams as an alcoholic

If you've seen an episode of HBO's "Sharp Objects," you know that the main character is an alcoholic. I'm curious to know how other alcoholics/addicts reacted to seeing this portrayal.

It's been on my list to check out. Thanks for the reminder. Even non alcoholic friends have said it can be tough to see in parts.

I stopped watching it, not because of the alcoholism but because it goes to a really dark place involving self-harming. I don't self-harm but I found it very disturbing to watch.

It's definitely hard to watch in some parts but I thought it was a pretty lucid, honest portrayal. I can't relate to the self harm but everything else, including the main character's family dynamics (pretty similar despite being more exaggerated and theatrical than my own) struck a major chord with me.

I found Amy Adams really convincing with her water bottles of vodka, and constant shameful trips to the same corner store for booze, passing out in her car and letting the battery run down, passing out in the bushes, hiding all her empties for recycling, running out of alcohol after 9 pm and heading to the bar.

She portrayed the all too familiar obsession/using/aftermath cycle so well.

The self harming was extreme (although the degree of dysfunction in this family is extreme too) The cutting is just another version of the drinking; her character learned to self medicate early as a means of self preservation - with alcohol, with men, with cutting. I was glad the portrayal was so uncomfortable and real.

Just to clarify what I mean by similarities in family dynamics (without giving away any spoilers) I basically can relate to the narcissistic/attention seeking mother, absent father, much younger half sibling, never fitting into the conservative background or the girly girl expectations.. I also went to school for journalism but never pursued it. So there were just a lot of random parallels in that show for me..

I found her portrayal to be very convincing on many levels. I haven't finished the series, but I did read the whole book.

Reviewing a movie or a series isn't really my forte. I am not sure what made her so convincing, but it was eerily convincing to me. Her whole attitude and demeanor was part of it. The way she would sit in the car and zone out was one thing. The way she would tilt her head back with a not give a **** look was another thing. She just seemed 'sloppy' and looked like she was hanging on by a thread. I forgot which episode I saw first, but I remember thinking that she looked like an alcoholic even before the overt signs (e.g. drinking the vodka in the car) were disclosed.

Cutting wasn'the something I did personally, but I heard other patients describing it during my stay in the psych ward. It sounded almost exactly like my drinking/using in the end. It was just a way to escape emotional pain. If you get too a certain level of physical pain your attention is removed from the emotional pain.

Just my 0.02.
