Town proposing a 3 strike rule on Narcan use

An Ohio town is proposing a three strikes and your out rule on the use of Narcan used to combat overdoses. If a drug abuser needs a third visit/Narcan use and they have NOT fulfilled previous community service and program requirements they could be denied emergency services and/or use of Narcan.

Middletown considers 3 strike policy on responding to overdoses

The Narcan budget expense will triple for this town. Over doses along with drug fatalities will surpass last year. Officials say stronger drugs the cause of the increases in od's and deaths. They say it's not about solving the drug problem but managing resources.

I can understand if it's straining their resources, but that seems pretty cold hearted to me. Why not just call it "three strikes and you're dead".

Wow! It will be i teresting to see if this idea gains traction.
In my area, many towns are struggling with this issue as well.

It puts first responders in a terrible position...what are they supposed to do, stop at the door and check to see if anyone has been there twice before? And if they have, call the coroner in ten minutes?

I get it, but it's predicated on something that we all know isn't true...that threats are a deterrent to an active addict. Nobody will ever stop and think, "Well, geez, I've been brought back from the dead twice, maybe I shouldn't use this time and get help."

I saw this on the news recently and does bring up quite the debate. One on hand it is a life saving drug to stop people literally from dying from overdoses, but on the other, addicts may feel they can continue using, maybe even more, as they know that bail out is there to save them if they over do it.

Look up the cost of generic narcan (naloxone).

Yeah, these people are bastards.

I am not far from that town. It makes me ill to hear this. The town is full of drug related crime and such, but good grief, how can anyone play God?
One police chief proudly announced recently that his police crew does not carry narcan and never will. He claims that the medical teams should be the ones to use this. What a load of crock. Will he refuse to use an epi pen on someone with anaphalaxis? No, the police force carry's epi pens.

I think its only 30+ dollars per dose of narcan?

What if someone is accidentally exposed to a deadly dose of drugs?

I am shocked at the attitudes of those holier-than-thou jerks.

To not save a life when one has the ability to save it, is the worst kind of cruel and sinful and to make a person whose very job is to save lives, let someone die, is criminal and the worst kind of politics.

I would be surprised if first responders don't rise up in outrage and refuse to deny this life saving drug.

I am outraged myself. How dare they "choose" who gets to live and who dies.

Yeah, I'm against eugenics, and I'm opposed to this, too.

Hello:

I live close to this town and also work in a courthouse. I have seen some people who have been narcamed over 20 times... 20 times!!!

We have a lot of people getting hi and driving and killing or hurting others and this community is at wits end.

This situation is affecting everyone and we focus on treating the symptoms and not the root cause of the problems.

Sad...
