Thanks, y'all. I had a very nice day. My dad got out of ICU yesterday -- he even felt well enough to sing me "40th & Plum" (for anyone old enough to remember that song) through his oxygen. My sister made it home safely to Georgia and my mother is still in one eighty-year-old piece (albeit pretty darned tired). My family cooked for me and we watched fireworks from our front porch and listened to my new Indigo Girls & John Prine cds. They also gave me a new oriole feeder, a window box, and a beautiful decorated sign that says "Simplify" (I'm an HDT fan, but I really think they were trying to tell me something).

We got some bad news this week. An old friend of mine was found dead Saturday morning. He had some clean time awhile back, had all of us around him supporting him, but he just kept slipping back. He struggled big time with surrender -- didn't trust anyone enough to find a sponsor, had a real hard time sharing what was going on with him, and finally, just quit coming around. He made a lot of bad choices in a choiceless state, and they all just piled up on him. I told my husband that I had been reflecting all day on the any one of a million decisions that I have made in my life that could have put me right where he was....and my gratitude for being sober reached a new level.

Our recovery is precious. It needs to be nourished and protected. I know I'm not supposed to tell birthday wishes, but the one I made yesterday was that all of us, on this path, use these milestones -- and each and every day is a milestone -- to reflect and find gratitude. Today might not be perfect, but about all of us can say that we could be in the shoes of someone who's not in such a good place. The hand of the divine is guiding us, will guide us, and all we've got to do is reach out and take it.

"You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should."

Thank you, angelgirl, for starting this birthday thread. Thank you all who've signed it or read it and beamed me your good thoughts. I've felt them! I hope I haven't hijacked it too terribly for my sappy soapbox speech, but I do know that today, I have to share what's inside. I'm seeing proof all around me of what happens when we don't.

Thank you all for letting me share.

Peace & Love,
Sugah

I guess your sister is a "Georgia Peach" too! What part of GA? You don't have say if you don't want, I was just curious.

She's just south of Atlanta, somewhere, but I can never remember the name of the little town. She's been there so long, she sounds like a native. I miss having her around more, but she's happy there & wouldn't live anywhere else.

Peace & Love,
Sugah

She's not far from me then! I am actually a little West of Atlanta but no one would ever know where it was so I just put Atlanta becasue everyone kn ows where Atlanta is. Does she have that "sweet southern draw"?
