9 months!?
I wanted to tell everyone that I have 9 months of sobriety today! To all newbies - it was not long ago that I came on this board (then left, went back out drinking, only to return when I really wanted to get sober). If I can do this you can too! I feel like a newbie too, but here is my advice (for what it's worth)
1) Get local support (AA has worked wonders for me, but there are other options too)
2) Don't look too far ahead - just decide to not drink today. Deal with tomorrow when it comes
3) Talk about the positive things that come (and they will come!!) from not drinking!
4) Read about recovery - I have read some great books that have helped a lot ('Drinking - A Love Story' by Caroline Knapp is excellent)
5) Appreciate what you have - be grateful. When I first heard someone introduce themself at an AA meeting as a 'grateful alcoholic' I thought they were NUTS! I understand it now.
6) Pray for willingness
That's it - I'll get off my soapbox now. Thanks to all of you!

Woo-hoo
WOO-HOO on 9 MONTHS!!!!
Good for you!! That is so wonderful!! An inspiration to so many here.. It's so great to have people that stay, and share their sobriety with others, especially new people coming in, suffering so,, they way we all came in.. Such a fitting place for such a post, I didn't think of i, when I posted mine, but, letting the newcomers know, it is possible, we can do this,, It's a journey,, and not always so easy, but that makes it even more beautiful when we achieve yet another milestone!!
Great for you!! Keep on Keepin on..
Love,
Becky

Congratulations on your 9 months and that's great advice that you are passing on.
I LOVED the book you mentioned. I think it especially captures the essence of women and alcohol. "Drinking: A Love Story" by Caroline Knapp is inspiring.

As a newbie (on my seventh day sober), I got so much hope from your message, jmhs. And so much perspective, too. From where I am sitting, nine months does indeed seem like such a long time, let alone the rest of my life. But it sounds that from where you are, looking back, the time almost flew by--and that you are so much happier now. Thanks so much for sharing. And congratulations!
Congratulations, JMHS!
I am a couple months "behind" you and find your advice to be right on target. You have a very "positive" approach to recovery, which I think has helped me, too. That is, recovery is more than simply NOT doing this or that. It means changing one's life for the better. And it seems like you have!
