A couple of things that really helped me were to get a sponsor and find a "home group" of AA or NA. My sponsor helps me sort out the good instincts and thoughts from the diseased ones, and my home group is where all of my true friends are. They care about me and want me to be well.
My sponsor also helps me focus on the positives I have in my life as a result of not picking up that first drink or drug: a little serenity, a clear head with no hangover, a few bucks in my pocket, physical health, a family who is beginning to trust me again, and the ability to look myself in the eye when I look in the mirror. These are but a few.
My so-called friends? Thyose drinking and drugging people I used to associate with? They only wanted to share misery. Remember this: my true friends lead me away from danger, not toward it. I cannot safely use drugs and or alcohol, and so they are dangerous.

hey thanks to everybody for your responses. i just spent my first weekend CLEAN and SOBER and it actually felt good. today at work people were asking why i had so much energy, and why wasn't i hungover as usual. i got a chance to enjoy the sun today when normally i would be hiding from it. I'm starting to get all this sh*t about how being sober is really better than being a drunk.
