Easter Weekend Sober and present- Weekenders Thread 07 - 11 April 2023

Easter Weekend Sober and present-

Weekenders Thread 07 - 11 April 2023

[posting for Mags - We're still having posting thread trouble]

As it’s Easter, many of us have a long weekend off ahead of us, and it can be a difficult time

I remember In the past it was an excuse for me to waste all my days off, binge drinking and then recovering from a hangover, and repeat!

I really thought it would be impossible to stop, but with some hope and determination and the help of the experiences and stories of quitting, from people here on SR, I found I could do it.

Having a plan really helped keep me occupied and helped distract from the cravings.

If you’re newly sober this weekend, give yourself a pat on the back, and smile at your achievements!

If you can stick around the Weekenders, you’re welcome, we all have one thing in common....keeping sober.

I will be here along with many others, all of us ex drunks and alcoholics. We are your scouts and can tell you what is on the trail ahead so you can be ready for any obstacles. I can tell you to come on! It is rocky and slippery but if you focus on where you place each step, you will have no trouble getting to where I am on the trail.

All of us can tell you where the potholes are, bumps in the road, and the slippery places, but we can't walk your path for you. We can only take joy as you succeed, and cheer, one and all!

I could use the Power of Easter and this Easter Weekend Thread for strength, so I am joining in with you. My heart is open for guidance

I am pulling up a comfy chair and will stay close.

Sleep time is calling for me, I will return for sure tomorrow.

Thanks Mags and Dee. I'm IN for a sober weekend!

My drinking used to go overboard at Easter. I used to finish work on a Thursday lunchtime - straight to the pub. Good Friday - pub. Easter Saturday - pub. Easter Sunday - pub. Easter Monday - pub. Then back to work on the Tuesday in no fit state to do anything. This was my life every Easter for 30+ years. What an idiot. Yet I have had a few unsettling moments over the last few days where I've let my mind drift towards reminiscing about how good it was at times in the past, spending lazy days over the Easter holiday, sitting with friends in the pub and enjoying a few drinks. The truth is, that's how it was many, many years ago, before the drink got the better of me. For a long time it had just been a long weekend of misery. I'm staying sober this Easter weekend.

This time in 2016 I lived in a dangerous place. Post hospital my brain, addled and confused convinced of rightness, saw me drink to dangerous levels. I felt so very alone, I drank. Very not to be in that awful place. I am haunted by the memories every day. Grateful to be alive.

Thanks Dee, Mags and friends

I used to have anxiety about Easter, because many of the stores are closed that day and I was afraid I’d run out of wine….

Glad to be here with you guys instead!

Hi Myley
Thanks Mags and Dee!!

No plans/thoughts for drinking for me. I sure have been have be having a lot of speed bumps and pot holes lately and in the past I know I would be stocking up using hiding places for the alcohol. So much for hiding Easter baskets or eggs..
Happy almost weekend all

Mrs CB tells the funniest Easter story. When she was a kid, they got up one Easter morning to find that the dachshund had eaten the entire contents of the Easter baskets. The chocolate evidently did not hurt the dog, but he was pooping the colored foil wrappers for days.

Thanks for the new thread mags and dee.

Augh what a day I had yesterday. Winter storm and I had to take my dad back to urgent care and get him re-admitted. Things were getting worse for him and on Tuesday evening we agreed to goto a walk-in clinic because he was adamant about not going back to the hospital. I decided that night, after getting home, that he needs to goto urgent care and I would take him first thing in the morning. He was not happy but I convinced him. I'm so glad I did. Test showed he was worse than the first time he was admitted but nothing needing surgery. They have a specialist coming in today.

Despite sitting in urgent care most of the day, it was a hard day. I had to shovel snow to get out, shovel because I got stuck, shovel to get dad out and shovel all over again at the end of the day. I spent the first hour and half at dads in the morning looking for his teeth! it got to the point where I was going thru garbage bags. I looked up at the heaven's and asked Mom for help. I finally found them in amongst the blankets on his easy chair (Which I had already checked several times previously). I'm just thankful that he was still wearing his hearing aids (Even tho the batteries were dead).

I decided that I'm going to enjoy this long weekend and turn off the worry about dad. I need a break. It's my sons birthday on Sunday. Know what he wants to do? Book Shop Hopping. That's right, he want's to visit several of the large book shops in the city and then all of us to go out for dinner. I think that's a great plan and I'm looking forward to it.

Tuesday also marked one year since dear daughter flew away to another city. She is happy and doing well. Mrs Dragon is planning a trip to visit at the end of the month. (Her second).

Thanks for listening (Well, reading)
Wishing everyone a good day.

CityBoy that is funny about Mrs.C’s dog eating Easter eggs. Pleased he suffered no ill effects.

Dragon, hope the doc gets to the bottom of your dads health probs. Book shop hopping sounds a great idea for your son’s birthday, then out for dinner…an extra treat! Enjoy your weekend. Pleased your daughter is doing well, that year went fast since she flew the nest.

Runner congratulations on day 186. Be lovely to be there and present for your granddaughter’s first Easter.

Robbie, I got to the stage where it would be a 4 day binge at home. glad we don’t waste time like that anymore.

Alpine, I hope the road soon gets smoother for you love.

PJ, I hope one day the haunted memories stopped you make new ones.

Sorry - that last post was a mistake! I hit the spoiler button by mistake, and I cannot delete it!

I'M IN for another sober weekend. Nothing special planned - I'm not a church-goer, so Easter isn't really a "thing" to us. I did Easter baskets for the kids until they left home. Don't have to do that anymore. Now I just try to resist all the Easter candy that practically takes over every store I go into.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and a happy Easter to those who celebrate!
