Mummy, I have been working hard on doing things for myself to make myself happy...Take care of myself in order to take care of those around me. Keep up your awesome work.

Of all my friends who still drink, only one has asked about my quitting in a disparaging sort of way. I could hear him mixing drinks over the phone during that discussion, and it erased the conflict I had over 'unfriending' him.

I think that as your body and mind recover from the alcohol, your thoughts become more clear regarding the social anxiety, worrying over what others think of you, etc. As you regain your inner strength, those who really matter respect you more.

I never got any disparaging responses, although some had an undertone of doubt and some just surprise. I didn't tell anyone I quite early on because it may have been interpreted as blather, and in the worst case, correctly so. Somewhere after a month or two, when I realized it was quit, I started telling a selected few, but no one knew before then. Oddly, it seemed like my alcoholic friends were the most supportive, even though they had not stopped.

That is the correct attitude, using alcohol is a dangerous game you can't afford to lose.

I didn't tell hardly anyone I quit until they noticed the physical & personality changes that couldn't be hidden, I also removed a few relationships from my life permanently the unneeded stress and drama wasn't worth the experience.

When I first quit drinking, I was doing it for my dogs, since I had no kids at home at the time. But the longer I was sober, the more I felt I was doing this for me, not just for my dogs. . At any rate, I am so glad I got sober and kept at it for the last 13 years. .
