New here.

Hi everyone, new to the site. I’m here to hopefully cut down on my drinking and drug use and finally stop.

Hey Bamsjams! Here are a couple of links for threads you can start with (maybe you’ve already seen them). But one is the 24 hour thread where we check in once a day (or more if you like) and the other is for this month’s class November 2022. :)

We're so happy to have you here, bams! I felt so encouraged when I found this place. I knew I'd never have to feel alone anymore.
You can definitely get free. :)

Total abstinence is the game changer in my experience 🙏

To expand on Brighterday's comment, you will eventually have to skip the cutting down part, while committing yourself to a full stop, and there is a physiological reason for this. You remove yourself from addiction by not drinking. Drinking less doesn't help because it feeds the addiction, and it's not like a diet where you are successful by feeding yourself less. Just feeding your addiction a little less, you may consume less, but are still making the addiction stronger. Alcoholism always gets stronger with every drink you take. This is supported by the never ending stories of alcoholics with long periods of sobriety who are pulled back into the nightmare by taking just one drink.

Giving it up entirely, including those once a year celebrations for this or that, is probably not the most pleasant sounding course of action, but you will find the actual experience to be much more pleasant than it sounds right now, and that can be by factors of 10 or 20. There's nothing like total abstinence, and you will experience this surprise when you get there.

Welcome!
Cutting down never worked for me.
I just had to quit.
Everyone is different of course but I don't hear too many folks having success limiting their intake. Usually leads to more of the same.

You do what you think is best and if that don't work try something else.

I will add that our ideas led us to where we are. Leave your mind open for new ideas. Especially ones from those who have been successful.

First and foremost,
Just Don't Drink Today
No matter What

I too found that I could not cut down despite the many attempts, I had to taking all drinking off the table. I wish you the very best.
