Day 80. I'm compiling a list of songs, what was the track you quit drinking to?

Hi Folks,

Day 80
I can remember, as clear as day, stood outside the detox centre 9.50am (waiting to go in) with a half bottle of vodka in my hand listening to a Tom Robinson track called "Feel so good,, hurt so bad" That was the last track the drunk me listened to, so I guess I quit to it.

As I said in my thread starter, I'm putting a compilation of tracks people "kicked" to. If you have a particular track you would like to share (and maybe a story that goes with it?) please post and I'll add it to my list of tracks to help motivate me. It also gives me a task to do for the next couple of days. I'll listen to every track posted. Also it will be really interesting for me. I need a boost to keep going at the mo.

The list is for my own personal use, so no worries about copyrighting (Dee)

Look forward to some interesting shares.

Thanks,

Kes

I remember a few things about that day, but not many, and I don't remember any music or movie DVDs I may have watched. It was just one more day of hoping to once more beat my 3 days sober record before I caved in to the cravings again.

I was playing the soundtrack of "Life." It was just me and a wretched hangover. I guess the song could be called "depression and anxiety."

In all seriousness, I didnt have any music. Perhaps If I were feeling more optimistic at that time, I would of played music. Thats just not how the cookie crumbled for me.

I couldn't even listen to my regular favorite music for a very long time after I quit. Too many flashbacks, bad memories, triggers, whatever you want to call it.

I listened almost exclusively to classical instrumental music on Pandora. Sometimes Christian instrumental on Pandora. Eventually I was able to listen to Christian popular music.

I was pretty messed up. No way I could listen to words.

It’s not very rock ‘n’ roll, I’m afraid, but when I first quit (well, cut down) and got fit, I had this routine of going to the gym, running 2.5km on a treadmill (which was a lot for the obese lump that I was) whilst listening to an extended version of Vanessa Mae’s Destiny. It did the job I suppose.

What I meant to add was, whilst I no doubt looked hilarious on that treadmill, it was the first time in years I felt confident. I knew I wasn’t just a useless blob 😆

When I wasn't listening to soothing classical music, or delta wave sleep music, it was "Rise Up" by Alicia Keys. Lyrics:

You're broken down and tired
Of living life on the merry-go-round
And you can't find the fighter
But I see it in you, so we gonna walk it out

Move mountains
We gonna walk it out
And move mountains

And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again

And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again

For you

When the silence isn't quiet
And it feels like it's getting hard to breathe
And I know you feel like dying
But I promise we'll take the world to its feet

Move mountains
Bring it to its feet
Move mountains

And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again

For you

All we need, all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
We will rise
We will rise
We'll rise, oh, oh
We'll rise

I'll rise up
Rise like the day
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I will rise a thousand times again

And we'll rise up
Rise like the waves
We'll rise up
In spite of the ache
We'll rise up
And we'll do it a thousand times again

For you

Not sure if this fits since it was during the early days of sobriety, but the song I listened to every day during the first year was Kenny Chesney’s “That’s Why I’m Here”. Certain verses, and the music itself, both melancholy and hopeful, helped me with my emotions, which were all over the place.

Congratulations on 80 days kes! Your are over the physical addiction side of things.

I was in such a bad way when I drunk my last drink that I didn't even know what day it was - I thought it was New Years Eve ('14/'15) but mid afternoon I learned it was still the 30th. I knew I either had either another year or two at the most drinking like I was before killing myself from it or I could quit.

I don't have a last track when I was drinking but these are three tracks I played a lot in early recovery and I associate with my sobriety since

Roisin Murphy - The time is now
It's a great track and the lyrics fitted my situation.

Soulwax - NY Excuse
From Belgium. I was physically in terrible shape and consuming too much of everything.

The Jackson Sisters - I believe in miracles.
From WAY back. I used to jog/run and it there's a more uplifting track for the last half mile, I've yet to hear it.

Just three songs but a reasonable representation.

I never stopped listening to or playing music.

I wont link but Richard Thompson's 'I'll Regret It All in The Morning' is about as far away from romancing drinking as you can get.
Same goes for Nick Lowes 'The Beast in Me'.(also covered by Johnny Cash)

Joe Walsh's One Day at A Time is a triumphant song - victory over addiction.

Guys, What can I say - this is brilliant, gives me so much to listen to and I'll check out every track!

TBH - I haven't heard most of your recommendations so this will be new for me and exciting. I love music and need new stuff as I'm stuck in my ways. There's only so much Wings a man can listen to!! You younger guys won't know who the hell I'm on about - that's your homework for the weekend LOL (Rock Show is superb, off the Venus and Mars album)

This is just what I needed, it keeps me busy and focused in a happy way - listening to your special tunes is kinda humbling too.

Thanks again and keep sharing - wow, I'm busy again!!!

I often listened to And So Begins The Task by Stephen Stills when I was gearing up to quit marijuana in 2018. The lyrics really resonated with me back then and I can still see why. Unfortunately I started up again after almost two years sober, but that song still holds a special place for me.

Lucky man - I love that track. The inspiral's song I'm not familiar, so it's going on now!!

Thanks Budd it's appreciatedy, Check out Tom Robinson from my original post. Unfortunately, it's about his cocaine addiction as well as falling in love. Superb!!! It's one of the albums of all tine for me.
