Is Sobriety Boring - Weekenders 22 - 25 July 2022
Count me in for another sober weekend.
Thanks Mags
Welcome to Weekenders Chevy 123!
Congratulations on shotgun calmself.
Massive congratulations on 2 months Robbie, that means you're over the real bad cravings stage. Excellent.
Glad you're feeling better MLD.
good to see you nonsensical, that's a mighty impressive sober resumé.
When you are young booze, bars , nightclubs undoubtedly play a part in socialising although even that is sometimes accompanied by some unwelcome negatives it terms of nights out where really bad things happened. Once we get older us problem drinkers kid ourselves for a while that non drinkers are the boring ones when in reality all we are doing is normalising poisoning ourselves. There's nothing interesting about being a drunk.
Thanks Mags

I know that lie AND that liar.
Since getting sober I have started two profitable businesses, a non-profit professional association, and a 501c3 charity. I finished my master's degree and I start on the PhD this fall. I teach as an adjunct professor at a local University and I build sets at the local community theater.
Boredom is a choice.

Seriously....that is outstanding. You should be very proud of yourself.
Marty love....hope you have fun taking the car out!
I got a little overly enthusiastic this morning, and I won't be taking the little car out today. I do feel better, but I'd better take it easy one more day. After being up and about half the day, I feel tired and I will stay home.
Marty, glad you're feeling better.
Went to urgent care last night for my UTI and got a shot of antibiotics and a scrip for five days of Keflex. Son in law picked it up this morning and brought it to me when he came to take Billie out. He is so good to me.

A few Years in, my Perspective swung around to that of a Sober Person. Of course. An ingrained bias is illustrated by the question posed in yet another excellent Weekender Theme by Mags. I realized the Boozing World commandeered the discussion railroaded by Booze Marketers, and Drinking Culture. The very basis of the question is slanted to make Sober appear 'not fun'. Because hammered is 'normal', right? Sober = Boring. Introverted. Isolationist.
When this perspective is driven home *so* much, it becomes the de facto perspective. And, we Sober Folks wind up having to knee jerk our justifications for 'why we're not joining the Office fun at FAC'? Or, 'why we're not gonna make the boozed-up TV viewing of some Sports event'. Ad nauseum.
Once this biased perspective became clear, my Boundaries and answers on declining Booze-permeated 'fun' more easily rolled off my Tongue. As my favorite 'Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream' Sticker goes: 'If It's Not Fun, Why Do It'? A: I don't anymore. I stay contently busy, and have Projects lined up that could run the rest of my Geezer Life. That said, I no longer base my sense of Self-Worth on always being 'busy'.
This Refrain is my lil ode to Alcohol. An amazing Remaster that oozes subtlety, and space between notes. Thanks, and congrats Mags on your amazing 9 Years in...

Hey lovely Mesa and Mesa dog (who is secretly the love of my life)....I am with you. I should clarify that when I mean busy, I mean busy having fun. Everything I do is fun....my copyediting classes (that are SO much work), my house-work....looking after this place makes me happy. It is gorgeous. I love preparing and making our meals, and having a pantry and fridge filled with awesome food. I love looking at my hundreds of plants and basking in their glory. I adore my rescued squirrel that I see every day (and feed) and all of her cousins. And the birds, too.
Life is for living, as said my favourite band ever. So shall I add a 70s music clip? I think so.
I would like to add that I was there live at that television show that day.

Held a coming-of-age dinner-party for my dd at a hotel, for around 25 family and friends. Only non-alcoholic drinks supplied. I remember pausing outside the room at one stage and hearing that buzz, almost a roar, of conversation that people have when they're having a really good time.
Knew then the party was a total success.

Good Morning Weekenders
Least pleased you got started on antibiotics, feel better soon hopefully.
Marty, very wise to stay home at least till you’re feeling stronger.
MesaMan, good thought provoking post. I’d forgotten the words I used and thought they were clever…. wasted, hammered, wrecked and smashed, to name a few. Those words sum up how I was most days. So pleased I got off that ride of destruction.
Great photo of Mesapup.
MantaLady, sending hugs and love. Hope things are going ok.
Caramel, I’m pleased your DD’s coming of age party was a success. Sounds like they had fun sober
A lot cooler and manageable here thankfully. We’re thinking of buying an air con unit when we eventually move homes. If the insane heat is going to be a regular occurrence.
Love to all Weekenders xxxx

Morning all. Thanks for the new thread Mags.
Glad the party was a success Caramel.
Mags I think an air con unit is a very good idea, especially with your breathing difficulties.
Robbie 2 months is great, well done you!
Love the side eye look from Mesa pup, leave my teddy alone.
My life when drinking was very chaotic. I jumped from one unstable dangerous relationship to the next. Friends came and went. Black eyes were becoming a regular thing from falling over, seems you forget to put your arms out to save yourself when drunk and face plant. I kinda wore them with a misguided pride - look how drunk I got!
Now my life is as different as chalk and cheese. I am learning who my authentic self is. Still not completely sure. Occasionally I have a moment where I miss the chaos as it was the only life I knew, even growing up due to loss and trauma.
These days it is all about my dogs. I do everything I can to make them happy and secure. I give them the life I wish I'd had .

Daily, to give your dogs such a good life is a noble purposer. .
I want to go to bed but itching started and the Benadryl hasn't kicked in yet and I'm just itching to beat hell.
And after one shot and one day of Keflex, I can't say that my UTI feels any better. Well, I can hope that tomorrow I'll feel better.

Hi ChopStick!!
I hope everyone is doing well. Least, I hope you are feeling better.
No big plans for us yet. We will go paddling someplace I am sure which will be nice. I am so happy despite some big speed bumps that I remained sober with a clear head and steady emotions (if that makes sense). Sure, the situation is still here that I have to deal with but at least I can do it with steady thoughts. I have no time for alcohol.
Happy almost weekend everyone.

Popping this in for CB.
Chopstick, sober weekends are the best.
Kaily, that is a wonderful expression - "...different as chalk and cheese." It's also true.
Mags, glad you are getting some cooler weather.
Caramel, glad your party went well. Were there any comments about there not being any alcohol?
I wouldn't describe it as boredom. There are times, however, when the reality is more evident, now that I'm sober, that nearly all of TV programming is just too ridiculous to watch, that everyone would rather play on an electronic device than talk, and that I don't have the energy for much after work.
