Sobriety and it's health benefits

I'm sitting out and having my morning coffee and planning my day.
. I just took my B/P and I'm happy to see that it's gone down lately with not drinking.
I stepped on the scales also and see that I'm down about 5 lbs without even trying.
I enjoy cooking and eat a somewhat healthy diet, but if I want a Big Mack, I'm eating it!
Anyway, the biggest attractions for me to quit drinking are mainly the mental ones.
. Feelings of despair, embarrassment, depression, anxiety, etc etc.
. But the physical health benefits come in a very close second to the mental ones.
Generally speaking, the human body is pretty amazing in that it's always trying to repair itself.
The body's systems are saying, "this idiot keeps pouring poison in! We are busy trying to fix all the damage! What's wrong with him!"
Anyway, with the summer months here, I'm working on getting the monkey off my back.
I'm trying to strike a balance with being physically active with yardwork, gardening, camping etc and being somewhat easy on myself too.
I'll start an excersize regimen when western ny turns into Siberia again and I'm isolated in the house.
Well, that's what I'm thinking about this morning, is simply the body's ability to do a lot of repair work when we aren't poisoning it.

I am amazed that after 30 plus years of total debauchery my body has not let me down yet.

Had a colonoscopy done Monday and the nurse checking my vitals asked if I ran.
I chuckled and said "what did you say?" She said do you run?
I said not unless someone is chasing me even then I will probably just stand and fight cause I ain't running far on these knees. Lol

She said she was wondering because I have the resting heart rate of a well trained athlete.

I am a very active person but do not do structured exercise just a lot of hard work.

53 yo and still work circles around many half my age.

Keep it up man it gets better!

I'm chuckling at your post FK.
I'm just happy to have the heart rate of someone who isn't legally dead!

Good for you!

I've been sober since I was 53. And I'm now 65 and like you I
still work circles around many half my age.

I sobered up at age 50. I am now 69 and feel younger than I ever have. Yeah, the young'uns can't keep up. At work the other day the boss was getting on a 21 year old and used me as an example of what to shoot for and the 21 year old said "Yeah, but he is an overachiever!!!"

This thread is lovely! Brought a big ol' smile to my face. You all remind me of this guy who passed me and my friends on the mountain side like it was nothin, he looked to be about 70! For reference we all are in our early 30s. Good on you!!

Zebra I don't think they make many like this bunch anymore unfortunately.
Keep killing it. Don't let no moss grow on your feet.

Nez you overachiever!
lol
Someone needs to explain the meaning and vital necessity of Work Ethic to this young man.

I fear these youngsters will learn a little late if ever.

I was sick all the time. Constantly getting colds and bad coughs that wouldn't go away. I've been sober just about 4 years and I haven't been consequentially ill the entire time. A few minor colds.

I feel a million percent better. Even a bad day when I don't get enough sleep is nothing compared to a hangover.

Overachievers are top notch in my book!
Winning all day long. Keep on running circles around the 20 year olds, Nez.

I used to hear all sorts of things when I was young about the young people. "The young people these days dont know how to work" ........ I have to say, I think I am in partial agreement now that I am in my 40's and I just taught a young person how to use a landline. Yep, taught a 25 year old on how to use a landline......

I mean....Im working real hard at not being judgmental. Just stating facts here. Facts.

The most dramatic and quick change in my recovery was my mental and emotional change. Physical changes start to occur too, but they take longer to notice. Over time, they can become big changes. But even today, my emotional changes are most important to me. Don't get me wrong. I take great pride in my physical health, but my emotional state is what keeps me going. Positive attitude comes first, for me anyway.
