Addiction is Fierce
Addiction is Fierce
Went to a Rock and Roll show last night with my lovely wife of 21 years. Enjoyed a delicious dinner before hand.
We had great seats just a few feet from the stage.
In front of us was a clean cut, in shape younger man. Maybe late 20's. He was drinking something like Vodka tonic. I didn't really pay much attention to him, but noticed the waitress maybe 2 times bring him another.
The show was about 1.5 hours. After about 20 minutes he stood and began moving about rocking out. He was having fun but then he sits down and spills his drink all over the nice lady next to him and all over the floor.
Then, he passes out sort of. He stayed up right in his chair, but his head hung off his shoulders forward as far as his neck would let it. It was pathetic.
Folks next to him called security. He was carried out.
So sad. How embarrassing. He may not remember anything today.
What a nightmare for him. I was there many times. Hopefully he made it to his bed. He may be up by now, regretful and craving. Yuck!
Never going back.
Booze is poison. Stay clean. Suffering and time.
Thanks.

I put myself in so many awkward & dangerous situations - oblivious to all around me. I'm so thankful we don't live that way anymore.
Glad you had a good, sober time. I remember thinking nothing would ever be fun again. I was so clueless & looking for an excuse to not quit.
Thanks for the reminder, D.

Thanks D122y. I was that guy too. Poor fellow.
Once I realised, after many such events, that I would never be able to drink moderately, the case was closed, and I will never drink again. Today.......
I often used to question your "suffering and time" signature. But I do no longer.

He might not be alcoholic.. Might just be a young person, experimenting.
Not all young people who behave this way progress to alcoholism. They learn, and change, and might not have predisposition. Like us.
But then again, he might. Who knows?
I hope he's part of the former.

My late teens and twenties were an unmitigated disaster. I'm surprised I lived. But I started getting really good jobs in my late twenties and when I turned 30 an analyst position with a Fortune 50 firm. It straightened me up pretty good but there were still some shenanigans at technical conferences and such. I once hotwired a large shuttle cart at one of the major hotels at DFW, drove it through the hotel lobby, picked up my boss and team members from the bar, and we proceeded all over the grounds until they called in police cruisers, haha. The security guard tried to have me arrested but I pointed out that he had basically given me permission when he told me to take it back to where I got it and the cops just laughed and called it a night. I remember the next morning piecing together that one and just cringing, but among the tech weenies it was worth a few points.
But yeah..Soo glad those days are over.

The show is called Raiding the Rock Vault. The performers are from all sorts of different bands. Howard Leese and Hugh McDonald (RRHOF) used to perform regularly before COVID.
The format is brilliant because they use 3 or 4 lead singers throughout the night. Sometimes they lead singers act as back up vocals. There is a level of competition between them, plus their voices warm up and don't wear out. The other band members don't get tired so they don't revolve.
For example, the high part of Aerosmith's Dream on is soooooo incredible. They have Todd Kerns who can just wail the high notes. Amazing!
Thanks!
