So on the advice of my Doctor I have cancelled my upcoming trip to West Africa and will probably cancel my summer holiday to Alaska and elect for bowel surgery. My diverticulitis is such that my bowel could perforate (nearly did last week) and I’d be in real trouble in a place with limited health services (W Africa) or a place where my insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions (US). So that makes me sad … but I’m glad to be prioritising my health.

That sounds like a good plan, even though it won't be as fun as travelling in Africa. But, after you have the surgery you'll be all set to go again.

Well done, that must have been a hard decision to make, but from eveything you've said the right one.
There is nothing more important than our health.
I am sure you will be travelling again soon and then with none of the health worries.

Good plan. Don't consider your plans cancelled, just delayed. You can go when you are better. That Alaska trip is definitely on my bucket list. Maybe this fall.
