I'm guessing that chips = what we in the UK would call crisps? I think our chips are known as fries in the US?

I think of chips, that would come in a fish and chips basket, as what we refer to as home fries which are round and maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. They often come with just plain French fries too.
