What does that mean, "wrote my car off"? I've never heard that expression.

It's an English expression. It means the car is damaged beyond repair.

An 85 year old dude crashed into your car on the way out? Well that's inconvenient. Hope there were no injuries, including him.

I hear that expression used most commonly in reference to an expenditure that can be used to offset income on your tax return. For example, a donation to the soup kitchen can be written off.

MantaLady, sorry your car got wrote off. (Hope the elderly man is ok. Our reactions aren’t as quick as we get older). Hope your insurance can provide a rental car for now maybe? Pleased your appointment went as well as it could.

MantaLady, it’s hard and overwhelming but if you can, break it down to ‘bite-size pieces’. One day at a time x

I gave him a hug and told him not to worry, it was an accident and he didn’t mean it

When there's an accident, do the police come and take names and registration and such? They do here, most of the time, except when the parties involved don't call the police. I would think that since your car is a total loss, the insurance company would want a police report. But I don't know how it is in the UK, I only know how it is here.

My mum is annoyed with me, rather than say “how are you, how can I help” she’s taking all this as “what about me, I am upset you are not thinking about me”. I love her to bits but it’s too much pressure

Oh, I'm sorry MantaLady. That's terrible. You are so kind and forgiving. I'm sure your insurance will provide a vehicle asap. My car was written off( we use this expression in Canada) a few years ago. There was a police report and I had a rental vehicle the next day. Had it

Until I bought a new( used) car.
Hope you're not too shaken.

MantaLady, you’ve got to take care of you before you can take care of anyone else, even your nearest and dearest.
