Newbie not new to trying to quit

Hello all!
This is not my first time trying to quit alcohol it's probably the 1000th time I have tried to quit! I have had limited success in the past but always seem to go back to picking up the bottle.
this is really starting to affect my health I am 67 years old my blood pressure was 155/98 this morning and I know a lot of it has to do with my drinking.
I drink an insane amount of vodka or wine every day.
I have not had a drink yet today I'm hoping I can make it through today without a drink!
I'm just gonna hang around and read what works for you all!
Thanks

Welcome Quitorelse!

I think this is the perfect spot for you. You'll find this an encouraging place as you make this big change in your life.
I was in a similar situation when I first came here. I'd been drinking for decades & knew it couldn't continue. My tolerance was unbelievable - not a good thing.
Maybe you could check with your dr for any suggestions? My blood pressure spiked when I first quit.
Glad to have you with us. You can do it!

Hi and Welcome,

You've made a good decision for your health and life. And, yes, you can make it through today without a drink. Reading here at SR is always helpful. Also, try to keep busy and active. Any kind of exercise is always good for getting through cravings.

Would you be able to go to a Walk-In Clinic if you're concerned about your blood pressure?

Can anyone point me in the right direction of the harmful effects of quitting cold turkey? I have been drinking over a fifth a day for close to three months! I know this sounds like an excuse do pick up a drink but I am really worried about it!
damn alcohol! It is my curse!

Withdrawals from alcohol can possibly be dangerous and unpredictable. But, that's not a reason to continue drinking though. If you have concerns, do go to an emergency room in your area and they will make sure you are safe.

Welcome to SR Quitorelse, this is a great forum for getting sober. The thing you have to keep in mind in the early days - when it is really hard not to pick up - is to keep reminding yourself that it won't be as tough as it is for more than 2 months tops and probably less.

As an alcoholic I don't think I could have tapered. Most people quit cold turkey without any dangerous side effects but if you live on your own it is safest to have some numbers to call in an emergency. I was drinking about the same as you in terms of quantity (whiskey instead of vodka) Sleeplessness was the worst side effect for me followed by brain fog.

Good luck!

Welcome to the family QuitorElse. You've come to a great place for support and encouragement. I stopped drinking over 12 yrs ago and my life is so much better. Not necessarily easier, but better and simpler.

I hope you'll make use of SR to help you get sober for good.

I'll have to agree with the other members. It's always best to check with a medical professional on detoxing from alcohol. I see that you are far from home and can get in touch with your doctor. And the only available appointment is tomorrow . So let's make that appointment. If you are having trouble before then emergency room walk in would be my route. What ever you choose we all support you in this healthy decision to stop drinking. Take care
