Alcohol addict ready to quit
Hello! I thought a brief introduction was a good idea here. I guess we could call me soomer, alcohohilic. Sadly, I've been addicted to alcohol for a very long time and have struggled with staying sober for many years. I am in my late 40s, started to have a serious alcohol problem in my early 30s. I am not new to recovery, but right now I would like to have some support. Is there anything in particular that I should share about myself? Again, I would like to quit my alcohol addiction.
You don't need to share anything you don't want to soomer. Welcome to SR. Can tomorrow be your Day 1?
This place saved my life over 2 years ago. I quit when I was 54 and I BEG you to trust me when I tell you to not drink for another 5 years. Quit now. The amount of damage that happens in that 5 years is devastating.
You are in a great spot to quit. Your 50's can be a great decade as it is meant to be.
Time to quit this nonsense for good right?

Hi Sooner, ditto! I was a heavy drinker dependent on alcohol from my mid 30s to my late 40s. I quit three years ago, and what a whirlwind of good stuff it’s been. It can be done. It’ll feel totally alien at first to not drink. You’ll have two or three weeks of poor sleep and monster cravings, but it really is just a few weeks. What you do have to do - and this isn’t some mantra - is realise that you can’t drink again. Sounds even more alien, but it’s the only way and also the easiest.
Credit to you for wanting to quit, so many people don’t get that far.

Welcome Soomer - I drank heavily for decades, with support here, I finally made the decision to stop - tried many times before - but this time - I really have just stopped! It feels good. I hope you post often - it will help
Welcome to SR, this is a wonderful place with wonderful people. I have found a lot of support here, more then I ever thought. I have shared my thought processes. Or lack of I guess with my drinking, my stress and how to handle different situations, how to deal with the cravings etc. The comments are compassionate, empathetic, insightful, can be blunt ( which I think is a good thing) and honest. I listen to these comments and think about them because the people here are going through or have gone through what we are going through. I wish you the very best.
Welcome! This forum has saved lives. You have come to the right place for support and to make a few friends along the way. You can do this. You can change your life. Its true.
You will hear about making a plan for your sobriety. What that plan will be is solely up to you. Some individuals use AA, SMART, or other programs. For me, I post on this forum in the mornings and have a structured life to get me through the days without alcohol. One day at a time. One step at a time. You got this!

Welcome! SR is a great and active community. Keep reading and posting and think about joining the "class of" chains - that daily (and sometimes hourly) accountability really helped me in my first serious attempt to get sober.
