4 months sober, Naltrexone, and therapy.
Hello everyone,
I had my first Zoom appointment with a Psychiatrist (MD) and an "Addiction Specialist Fellow" this morning. It went well, and felt good to embark on a path to healing trauma that I drank over beginning at age 18.
The psychiatrist encouraged me to think about receiving an injection of Naltrexone to help my sobriety along with psychotherapy. She also talked about future prescription of medication for PTSD. I asked for time to research and think about this, as I am concerned about side effects.
So, I am interested in hearing if anyone is currently taking Naltrexone and what your experience is with sobriety. I am not interested in moderation, only abstinence.
It felt good to be heard. It felt powerful to courageously tell my story to people who are trained to help, and who reconfirmed that alcohol use disorder is a biological disorder not a character defect.
I feel good, but it was alot to talk about traumatic experiences. Going to eat a good lunch and then clean my apartment!
I am four months and 2 days sober today, and I could not have gotten to this day without all of your compassion and support, so thank you!

Thank you for the link Dee. I feel resistant to taking medicine, but the Psychiatrist said that she recommended it because of my history of relapse. I will take a look at the post you linked.
I hope that you are dong well and Happy New Year!

I take Naltrexone pills, 50 mg per day. I don't experience any side effects, but some do. One thing to remember when you research this is that every medication has some side effects for some people. It's cut down on cravings for me significantly. Congratulations on 2 months.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and support. I decided to decline medication for now as I am not experiencing cravings, but it is good to have that option if I do experience a desire to drink and relapse in the future.
My current health insurance ends 12/31/21, and my new employer benefits plan doesn't start until 1/23/22. I feel some anxiety around this gap even though the Psychiatrist I saw yesterday encouraged me to reach out through messaging if I need help, and so I decided to look for a Therapist through the Psychology Today website. I found one with expertise that matches my needs and I emailed her today. I intend to pay out of pocket until my insurance kicks in.
Happy New Year everyone!
