Naltrexone?

Id love to hear about peoples experiences with it. Advice? I’ve been talking about it with my therapist and psychiatrist, but I’d love to hear anyone’s real life experience taking the medication as a means to stop drinking.

I didn't like it, I'm afraid. It gave me really intense twitches and body jerks when I was falling asleep and waking up. It also really disturbed my sleep...

It does work for some people though xx

I am 4 months sober and today and during my first therapy appointment with a Psychiatrist and Addiction Specialist, medication was also recommended and offered because of my history of relapse. The Dr. said that the critical time for relapse is 1-5 years, alcohol use disorder is biological and so medication is useful to prevent relapse and maintain abstinence and/or moderation (I am pursuing abstinence) and I have made it to two years in my past before drinking again. I feel resistant to taking the medication (Naltrexone) because of reading about the long list of potential side effects, and am leaning towards cognitive behavior therapy instead, as I also suffer from PTSD, which she also recommended meds for in conjunction with therapy. I am taking 4 weeks to think things over, but I wish that I could have a heart to heart talk with someone who is in similar shoes and is taking or has taken Naltrexone!
Good luck to you in your quest for healing in sobriety.

I take Naltrexone and it did help me stop drinking. It works well for SOME people. I still take it. I tolerate it well with no side effects.

I took Naltrexone but didn't get on with it. It kinda took away pleasure sensations not only from drinking but everything. Everything felt dull, for want of a better word. That in turn made me want to drink more to 'feel better'.

I then went on to take Acamprosate which for me was much better and without doubt helped reduce my cravings.

No matter what you take you need a hundred percent commitment to getting sober, the medication is just a tool to help achieve it.

Good luck.

How long did it take to help you reduce cravings? I'm on it right now.

I think it's worth a shot if you are having trouble staying sober. If it doesn't work, or the side effects are too much, you can just stop taking it. Also, if it does work, it could help save your life.

Good advice. If it doesn't work or causes side effects, just quit taking it.
