Hey. I'm struggling with my alcohol addiction. I've been working with an addictions counselor for the past year. I've moved from harm reduction into the abstinence world last month. I was great at first, but after 3 weeks had a pretty bad slide that resulted in me headed to detox. I'm home now, have made some amends with my wife and today has been great. I'm now at day 6 sober. I'm trying out all these online resources for the first time, just looking for an edge on this fight with addiction.
Hi MPRinthewoods. Welcome to SR. This is a great place to seek support from others all of whom understand what you are going through. Congrats on Day 6. Those are tough foundational days. I hope you keep working with your addiction counselor and come up with a plan to stay sober.
Welcome to the family. Six days sober is a good start. Do you have a plan for sobriety? What you'll do if you're tempted to drink? What you'll say if you're offered a drink?
Part of your plan could be utilizing SR. If you feel like drinking, come here first and tell us. We'll do our best to talk you out of it.

It's great to have you join us, MPR. I drank 30 yrs. & never imagined my life without it. Coming here helped me to not feel alone in the fight. We all understand what you're going through - welcome!

Thank you everyone for making me feel welcome, I appreciate it. I'm also starting to explore AA as well as SMART systems. Just wondering how these have worked for people or if there are any other suggestions.

Try both of those MPRinthewoods. Many many people have had great success with each. I don't do either as I have SR and an in-real-life group of recovering attorneys who simply formed an organic group for support and fellowship. I will observe that I am absolutely convinced that a sense of togetherness, support and community is crucial to recovery. Going this alone rarely works I think. I get those things from SR and my in-person group, but countless people get those things from AA and SMART. Give them both a try and keep an open mind. There is nothing magical about any system of recovery and that includes AA and SMART, and often a particular meeting is only as good as its most off-putting member. That is not necessarily an indictment of the system itself. It could just be a group of people you don't click with. My advice is to give an honest shot to each of those systems.
I'm glad you are here with us MPRinthewoods.

Welcome to the site MPR. I had a few days sober when I realised I needed a plan. The good people on here showed me that. For me it was a case of casting out the net over several methods and taking what fitted me best out of each. I believe our addictions are as individual as those suffering from them so I tried to devise a plan that suited me best in any given situation. What works for me might not work for others...and vice versa but the one thing we have in common is putting the work in to find solutions for each of us. Theres a huge volume of advice and personal testimony on here... as the old cliche goes.... take what you need and leave the rest.
