Horses for Courses - Weekenders 15 - 18 October 2021
Saoutchik requests permission to come
aboard!
Late today - v.busy.
Congratulations on shotgun Reid
Even more Congratulations on 50 days AthensDawg!
Thanks for the astute OP Mags. We have different background, personalities, ages and drinking profiles so it's no surprise that one size does not fit all when it comes to quitting successfully. For me it was a lot of displacement activities that kept the demon cravings at bay long enough to get over the initial 'hump' of adduction. It took me a lot of failures to find what worked. Willpower alone didn't do it.

I'm IN! Thank you Mags for the thread.
Horses for courses eh? I was joking with a colleague only yesterday about my complete lack of horsemanship... On topic however, I also think it necessary for different people to find different solutions. The common factor though is abstinence, with whatever it takes to achieve it.
Congrats on 50 days AthensDawg, congrats on Shotgun Reid, well done everyone else who is racking up the days.
Back to work... Warm wishes to all. Forwards.

Great OP! I had a lefty Quarter Horse, and trying to teach him dressage was a lesson in futility! It took me so long to figure that out.... Just like it took me so long to figure out that drinking is not for me, I guess. So I'm not so quick on the uptake sometimes, but at least I made it here.
Happy weekend, everyone!
Happy weekend, everyone!
Congratulations Midnight and AthensDawg.
Nice to see you Forwards.
My lawn mower broke yesterday, mid lawn. I have mentioned before I am a bit obsessed. It was in my car and back at the shop within the hour. Not in a calm collected way, more of a panic. I kept trying to rationalise but to no avail. The shop was over half an hour away, I'd had no lunch but couldn't even allow myself that before I went.
I got my refund and then bought a new one - exactly the same as the broken one. Drove home, assembled the handles etc and finished the grass. Only then was I calm.
It would of been the same with anything. Everything has to be instant else it causes anxiety.
On brighter news. It is over a month since I ate any chocolate or ice cream.

Athens, I’m assuming you mean the Florida keys, but correct me if I’m wrong. My husband and I went there last February and it was one of the best trips I have ever taken. I hope you have a great time!
This weekend the husband and I are traveling to Boston to visit friends and see some sights. I haven’t been to Boston since I was pretty young so don’t remember too much. I love history/ghost tours and this trip since it is the spookiest time of the year I got my husband on board with doing 2 ghost tours, 1 in Boston and 1 in Salem. I’m pumped to say the least.

Bodhi, the ghost tours sound fun.
Athensdawg, should be a good time for a keys trip.
Kaily, glad you got the mower squared away.
Vikinggf, "not so quick on the uptake" is a good description of me sometimes as well. Took 38 years to reach the conclusion that having an alcoholic dependency was not the way to go.
Ried, I hope things are going well with the family property.

Ghost tour sounds fun. So do the Keys, though. So much possible with sobriety. Why, you can jump in the car and return lawnmowers without a thought about drunk driving.
Kaily, I'm the same way. PTSD for me. Some days are better than others, but if any big thing goes wrong I'm a mess for a while. R e a l l y hair-trigger amygdala. It's gotten better but I don't know that I'll ever go back to normal. I immediately go to breathing exercises - that helps the most of anything.

Afternoon Weekenders! Today is the 45th day of spring and outside the temperature is 34 Celsius! Looks like we are in for a hot summer!
Thanks for the opening post, Mags. It was also interesting to read about your horsing background.
I have been a bit scarce, which fortunately has nothing to do with anything other than being quite busy. We had to pack my father’s entire house for the movers who came on Tuesday last week and took all his furniture and other belongings to Cape Town. The new owner and his family moved in the next day.
We arranged with an auctioneer to collect all my father’s unwanted furniture and other belongings to sell on auction, which was quite an interesting experience, even if the goods are yet to be auctioned. The eccentric auctioneer also introduced me to their timed online auction website, which has unfortunately spoken to my addictive personality. Although I haven’t bought much (apart from an old model steam engine), I keep following the online auctions with worrying enthusiasm.
Anyway, I hope all the Weekenders are doing well and look forward to hopefully keep up with the thread once more. Well done on 9 years MB and it’s good to see you Vinny and to hear that you are feeling well.
