foods good for the liver

Been reading about it and making myself lots of smoothies to pack in as many ingredients as possible that are good for the liver.

Kale
Spinach
Tumeric
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Lemon juice
Ginger
Garlic (not putting this in drinks but will eat it another way)

Hope this helps some people.

Oh! Last week I went to the hospital to get off Klonopin and asked them to check out my liver while I was there (function, ultrasound, etc..) and according to the hepatologist at Boca Raton Regional the best foods for your liver were those with high levels of thiamine - pork, raw vegetables and whole-wheat cereals. Folic acid - fruits, vegetables, meats, beans, nuts and dairy foods. And most importantly food high in carbohydrates - potatoes, rice, and so on.

that cannot be right. Sugar is really bad for your liver and a lot of carbs end up as sugar

One of the biggest causes of non alcoholic liver problems is the carbs and sugar.

He’s the top liver specialist in Palm Beach County/ SE Florida and the one on my treatment team so I’m going to stick with what he typed out for me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Plus I’ve never seen any reputable studies saying otherwise and other than the benzos I took for anxiety I take no medication and never needed to. I’m healthy and have never had a problem with carbs so why mess with a good thing?

Just to be sure I checked the PAPs in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and still nothing supporting your claim. Just eat what works for you

Protein is converted to glucose also, you know that right?

Wow hope you get a break, you must be way down the road if you are looking at foods to fix your liver

I hope you are taking all the tests that you would need to identify how badly your liver is damaged as well as trying self treatment.

As a reminder, it's best to work with your doctor if you are having medical issues of any kind, including liver issues. And it's also important to remember that we are all different, and what might work for one person won't necessarily work for the next. Common sense of course tells us that eating a healthy diet is beneficial, but let's not get into recommending for or against specific things when we don't know the full story.

Not surprisingly, I had a mild fatty liver in my drinking days. This was diagnosed during a routine ultrasound. I’d been a much heavier drinker before this and had quite nasty aches and pains. After I’d been sober around six months, I went for a private liver fibroscan. In that time, the liver fat had all gone!

The consultant talked about healthy eating and staying slim, but he said these were secondary compared to me giving up drinking. Our livers seem pretty good at looking after themselves provided we don’t drink. That’s glossing over a few points - some people get liver problems through bad luck and being overweight is really bad for the liver, but assuming we’re otherwise healthy, steering clear of booze will hopefully keep liver fat away.

I didn't add anything to help my liver. I removed something.

Drinking.

My Doctor told me the best thing I could do for my liver was eat healthy, stay hydrated and get plenty of sleep and regular exercise.

I firmly believe there are no shortcuts to getting well just as I believe there are no short cuts in not feeling great for a while after we quit drinking.

It turns out that's good for pretty much every organ in your body if you tend to abuse alcohol.
My pancreas is no longer raging at me. But I'm pretty sure I had acute pancreatitis on a few of my detoxes.

avoid drinking for sure.

It seems that spinach and kale can help you rebuild liver cells. Certainly if you weren't eating anything good your liver might struggle to repair even if you stopped drinking.

All vitamins are needed.

Avoid paracetamol that's for sure. It happened to me. I had it on the morning after (saturday morning) and then went out drinking again that day. Made my liver hurt and then I had a bad test reading 3 years ago.

paracetamol = acetamyophin (Tylenol). A no-no when you're drinking heavily. If you have a headache, water is safest and can help speed up the healing.

Good foods for the liver are also blueberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, APPLES! along with broccoli, asparagus, zucchini (other squashes too). Your liver will love a good diet. Hard on liver and kidneys are sugars, chips, fried foods, processed meats, fatty meats. Sugary or diet sodas are bad for the liver. Cleaning up the diet is a great way to start feeling better.

For anxiety (jitters, shakes, DT's) I have found herbal teas helpful. What helped me at my worst were teas with chamomile or valerian root, even in the mornings (some of the "sleepy time teas" have a nice blend). I have found them helpful any time of the day, they can help one to relax.

Ahh diet. . . a topic I've studied deeply, for most of my life, yet one that is nearly as divisive as politics and religion. I certainly do agree that the Alcohol Free Diet™ is definitely the way to start! I also believe that everyone's body is different and there is no one size fits all diet. I have found that people have cured the same ailments with vastly different diet approaches. There seems to be a missing, ethereal, component to what works, or doesn't work, and I am increasingly coming to believe that component is the power of the mind. I think what I call "mind work" (meditation, positive affirmations and intentions, healing visualizations) may be the most important aspect of healing and one that should be focused on the most.

To do these things, of course, whether it involves eating or meditation, requires willpower. One must actually do them, daily, with extreme discipline and focus. I struggle with this myself, and mostly fail at it, but it remains my primary goal to integrate everything I have learned, finally and fully, into my own personal n=1 experiment towards higher living.

In my first few months after quitting, I did all sorts of things like drink milk thistle and eat beets to heal the damage. Little did I realize that the single most important thing was just quitting the alcohol, haha.
