Polaroid I'd recommend finding a doctor who specialises in the treatment of addiction. There are a range of non-addictive medications that can help in early recovery.

The problem now the docs here are so anal (if I can use that term) - they won't give me a proper tapering plan from benzos. I've been addicted to them for about 15 years - and all they've done is help me - alcohol has done nothing but destroy me.

I don't mean to endorse any drugs, but they don't seem to get it. I don't get why health "professionals" can't seem to understand that people are different. While I think that's the exact think I think they need to understand. They just follow protocol, and I'm really getting sick of this.

Edit: But thank you all here for your support.
I think most doctors would support you getting off of benzos safely since they are not really intended to be taken for long periods of time.

I've read the Ashton Manual several times. I've mentioned it to docs several times. However, what's so messed up even in this 'wonderful' country, no doctors have heard of it. Seriously, none.

Isn't it ironic that a mess like me actually know more than so-called professionals? I'm not making that up.

Actually, I don't want to get off benzos just yet. I don't feel ready. When I feel ready, I can try - but it has to go slowly, following the Ashton Manuals tapering suggestions. Once at rehab I was worn off 5mg Valium/week. Way, way, way too fast for me. Was completely destroyed when I left, and tbh, they just made it worse.

I've tried so many times to get these so-called "specialists" to get it, but they just f-ing follow protocol. Dead scared of their own job is the ironic truth here. Maybe I should give a link to my posts on here, that may help. I'm not exactly great at speaking out so....

That acutally sounds like a good idea, or printing out some of them. Sometimes it's easier to share the information in a written format if you have difficulty sharing verbally. Doctors follow protocol because the protocol generally works, and it also allows for exceptions. Self-diagnosis was a hinderance to my recovery, both from an addiction and a mental health standpoint. AKA - I need to listen to what the doctors were telling me, even though it was not what I wanted to hear.

I think printing out this thread and showing it to a dr is a great idea!
