I don’t understand the group stages at all. How can England be guaranteed to go through already?
I’m hoping England lose tonight. A win would likely mean the next opponents would be Germany ☹️

Yes, in 1945 ☹️
Actually, England famously beat Germany in Germany 5-1 in 2001, but that’s the only victory in a whole sea of losses. Germany also beat a very good Portugal side 4-2 at the weekend. I think they’re best avoided. England have got some decent players with champions league experience, but I just can’t see them doing well against the likes of Germany.

Shame about Scotland but Croatia are probably a better side than they looked against England.
I still fancy France to win the whole thing.

I did see some enormous beer bellies in the England crowd, some were topless!
Great advert for sobriety right there! I’ve been busy these last few weeks studying and developed an annoying craving for egg custard tarts! Despite such debauchery, I haven’t put on any weight. I soon would if I added beer into the mix.

England v Germany ☹️
I lived in Germany for years, and ironically whenever England played Germany, that’d be about the only time I didn’t go to the pub! The Germans have long memories and haven’t forgotten the dubious goal in 1966 so love to celebrate any victory over England. After 2010, the 4-1 defeat with the Frank Lampard ghost goal, I didn’t leave the house for two days, and my German work colleagues didn’t dare talk to me for a week!
I fear the worst 😆

The trouble is it’s not even a good German team ☹️
One thing I noticed living in Germany is that they do things together. Say you’re going out for an evening and moving on elsewhere, in the UK we’d just meet up at the other end at various times. A few people would get lost, but they’ll get there in the end. The Germans, though, will all wait for each other. It’s really annoying too! I was on a business trip once in France with a German colleague. For some reason, we had separate hire cars, and were heading back to the airport and stopped to fill up with petrol. I had a minor issue with the payment or something, but it was fixed in 2 minutes. My German mate, though, had waited for me! He asked if all was OK, etc.
I felt like telling him to get lost as I didn’t need his help, but I kept quiet. In retrospect, what he did was very kind. If my card had been declined, he’d have helped me out.
As annoying as it is, that’s what Germans are like. I bet the football team all look out for each other too.

That was a dull 90 minutes but brilliant extra time. All the remaining games look good, but I wish I had time to watch.
What an irony. As a drinker, I’d sit and watch entire tournaments. Now I don’t have time 🤣

Mostly getting older is rubbish but one advantage is that I am mentally ready for tomorrow's likely defeat and disappointment against Germany. It has got easier as I have got older and lowered my expectations.
It's the hope that gets you!
