Newbie saying hi.
Brief hello and introduction, I'm a married father of two young boys living in Idaho. I've been a relatively high-functioning/under-the-radar alcoholic for most of my adult life until finally agreeing to stop drinking about four years ago. I went almost a year, and then would periodically "relapse" into occasional (but more minor than before) drinking patterns, until about 6 months ago. The reality of how much of a problem it is and has been has only more recently become clearer.
My hope is that starting to openly discuss this and issues related to it will cement my conviction to stay sober indefinitely/permanently, help me make amends with my wife/promote healing from past dysfunction, promote more lucid self-discovery, and so on.
I'm particularly interested in mental health issues related to addiction and recovery. I hope I can offer at least as much general support and encouragement to others as I receive.
Thanks for reading.

Welcome BatDad. I also went under the radar for the most part, for decades, and even tapered back over the years, with some long periods of sobriety, but of course the damage is still being done when we continue relapsing. As long as we are in our addiction, there will be damage to relationships, as well as our physical and emotional health.
Glad you've decided to do something about it. It's well worth it, and this is the place to do it for sure.

Welcome.
The things you described you wanted from opening up on here and staying sober is exactly what you will get.
i found it is a process i had to go through and pretty much everyone else follows the same pattern/trend in their recovery.
There is something called the jellinek curve that shows the road into addiction and the road to recovery. Might be helpful.
gather all the tools you can to slay the beast.
Sobriety is best choice i ever made and always will be.

Welcome BatDad. I'm interested in mental health issues related to alcoholism, too. In my case I had depression and anxiety for many years before I began drinking. I know they both played a big part in my starting to drink and I knew I needed to dig deep and begin to deal with those issues if I was going to recover.
You will find lots of support and inspiration here.

Welcome BatDad.
First step has has been accomplished! You've arrived here with same thinking as us all. We want to stop drinking, and build productive lives for ourselves free from the shame, secrecy, and self loathing.... And it happens, most definitely.
Second step is to contine posting here with all of the ups and downs that go with what is probably the most important decision of your life.
Hope to se you around.
It's worth it.

Welcome to SR BatDad!
You clearly know how to stop and just end a few tweaks here and there to stay stopped.
My own experience was that during the first months of stopping I was all over the place mentally. Reading here that it was not unusual definitely helped me deal with it. Good luck!

Welcome BD. Like everyone is saying, SR is an amazing place. I was in the same place that you are for many years of my life. Work, this website and more work has given me the life I aways imagined but never thought I would achieve.
What's your plan?
