3 years today!!!!
I am sitting on a bench in the sun opposite the beach on the South East Coast of England waiting for my bootcamp class to start. This time 3 years ago I was coming off of a 10 day binge of alcohol and xanax feeling absolute terrified and completely broken. I made the decision on my bewildered and despairing state to do whatever it took to get sober and it was the best decision I have ever made.
My top tips.
1. Acceptance. I had to fully accept there and then that I could never drink alcohol safely and moderately and if I wanted to live I had to be done with alcohol for good.
2. Take one day at a time. In the early days my priority was to get though the day without picking up a drink no matter what and to get my head on my pillow sober.
3. Get through every craving/urge whichever way you can. They are so uncomfortable but DO NOT GIVE IN.
4. Daily Gratitude.
5. Stick close SR and/or seek support outside of the forum.
6. Be honest. With friends and family. i needed support and I got it.
7. Once the fog starts clearing, start building a life that you don't want/need to escape from. Seek therapy if you need to heal from trauma. Look after yourself and treat yourself with love and care.
8. NEVER GIVE UP. no matter how strong that AV is, no matter what happens in your day, a drink will never ever make any good situation better or bad situation better. Only a million times worse.
I lived to drink and I drank to live. Alcohol lied to me. My life today os not perfect and never will be but absolutely everyrhing I do is 100x better without it.
HAVE FAITH in yourself. You can accomplish anything!

This is so inspiring
Congratulations - I love what you said about alcohol never making a situation better. I hear people grapple with whether or not they are an alcoholic and your point sums up why it doesn't really matter. The more important question is, would your life be better without alcohol?
