It will only take 1 drink
I find it hard to understand but this I know for certain. One single drink today will mean many in a few days then all of a sudden a week of my life would be a blur. I would become a bottomless pit for liquid consumption. Never full and always thirsty, thinking about the next drink while I'm half way through the one in my hand.
Atleast I know now that drinking the drink will not satisfy anything, but do the complete opposite.

I certainly feel like a drink on the odd occasion especially with certain types of food.
But there’s enough research out there saying a former drinker’s brain chemistry has been irreversibly altered and any return to drinking will lead to the same addictive behaviour. No one’s excluded from this, so it’s quite foolish to drink again. That Italian dish might not be 100% without that glass of red, but that’s a very small price to pay.

I've been sober for well over a year and a half and I dont crave drinking nor do I have an urge to drink. However, I still dont see the point in drinking only one or two. For me, if I was going to drink it would be to drink as much as possible until I pass out. I would go to a bar and drink beers and do shots until closing and then keep going. Sitting around at lunch and drinking a single beer was never on my radar and never will be because I think, why bother giving yourself a little sip when you can have the whole barrel?
But, since thats not what I want to do in my life anymore, I just dont even start.

Idly thinking yesterday as to what has been the most mportant thing I've learned since getting sober.
Turned out to be, 'it only takes one drink."
Your post reminded me of my musings Finalcall.
Hope you are travelling well.

I have to say thanks as it’s brave posts like yours that led me to reconsider my own situation. I really thought I’d be giving up for a few months and then drinking occasionally again. It’s still the belief of many out there. Then I started to read such posts on here and did a bit of research into GABA receptors in the brain and discovered that drinkers’ brains are irreversibly altered. We’re odds on to be addicted all over again after just a few drinks. It’s pretty terrifying, but it’s one of the things in life we have control over.
I’m 27 months sober and life is great, but I know full well I’ll be massively tempted to drink some time in the future. I know now if I do so, the statistics say I’ll be an addict again within weeks. Let’s hope I’m ready as it’ll be a huge waste if I drink again.

It is the FIRST drink that does the damage and the ONLY drink we need to stay away from. If we don't take the first drink we cannot get drunk. Put a defence against that first drink and you never have to drink again and I am coming up to 3 years sober and I have no desire to drink today and that is a miracle for an alcoholic of my type.
