newcomer with AA question

Good morning. I was in a detox center for about 10 days back in 2013. Stayed sober for about 3 months. I live in a rural county and the AA meetings are limited...especially during covid time.

I went to my family physician back in mid-January. He put me on phenobarbitol and i was sober for almost 4 weeks....then started drinking again. Went back to my doctor Tuesday and he is willing to give me another round of pheno....but I have to go to a psychologist for a while first and then we all 3 will decide when it is time for me to move forward.

Has anyone participated in AA online? The AA location i attended back in 2013 didn't impress me so much. It seemed most were there due to court mandate and no one shared anything. I have no idea who was AA, NA OA....all we did was read from the blue book out loud when called upon.

Any advice is appreciated!

Hi and Welcome,

Some of our members are using AA Zoom meetings and I'm sure someone will be along with more information. I think that talking to a psychologist will be helpful to you. I know for me, I had to deal with the underlying issues in my life when I stopped drinking.

HELLO! I attended AA online. The positive is that you can virtually go anywhere in the world now. You don't have to attend a meeting in your area, if it is not appealing or serving you in a way that is beneficial.
Someone will come along with a list of meetings.

Congrats on getting sober! You can do this. We are here for support.

Good decision Lucyloo. Welcome!

Many members here use online AA meetings. Reading and posting here at SR is also very helpful.

There is a new "class" every month of those who just quit and give each other support, which was really beneficial to me.

This month it would be the link called Class of February 2021.

Here are the AA meetings via Zoom:

I recommend the 5:30 "Living Sober" meeting from this group (near Seattle, GMT -8h):

https://eastsideaa.org/meetings/?tsml-type=ONL

There are usually about 60 participants, so you don't need to share if you don't want to. But I suggest introducing yourself when they ask if anyone is in their first 30 days of recovery, and even trying to find a sponsor.

Hey Lucyloo,
If your birth year is '62, we are from the same High School class!

I go to meetings online every day, sometimes twice daily.
Here's where you can find them in Baltimore: https://baltimoreaa.org/upcoming-meetings/
Most of them have passwords, but some don't.
I'll send you a private message with the password to the "Meeting Access" page.

O

Also, phenobarbitol??? I know that's used for acute alcohol withdrawal in the hospital, but it seems like that would not be a good medication for you or I to self-administer as it's highly addictive. Is it possible you can get to a provider who has some experience in treating people with substance disorders? Doesn't have to be a specialist, but maybe you could get to a general practitioner in the closest large metropolitan area? I don't know, maybe you're fine with it. I have never developed an addiction to anything other than alcohol, so I may be speaking entirely out of turn...

This is THE best time to be doing AA online using zoom. There are so many meetings everyday ALL over the world. So many great speakers. I love it and can log on anytime from the comfort of my own home.

I am thinking you are female? This is the meeting ID and password for a 24 hour women's meeting. The meetings start on the hour, every hour , its amazing.

If you haven't already done so, download the zoom app. It is so simple to use.

And type in Id number; 9289 414 8568
password is Billw

Happy zooming

♥️🙏

I started with a local group recently, and got a sponsor and started working the steps, which is key. Just going to meetings will not help you stay sober. You need to work the program with another alcoholic.
I have done thia over zoom.
