Naltrexone

Can anyone please advise me about Naltrexone, my GP prescribed me with this. I was reading and confused whether the pill should be taken after being sober? Or I can cut down drinks and start using Naltrexone?
what I read was it stops the receptors from craving for more alcohol
please advise

Apparently, naltrexone helps with cravings. What instructions and information did your dr give you about using the drug? Maybe you could get more information from the doctor.

Have you filled the prescription yet? You should be given full instructions and all of the drug info when you are handed the pills.

You can also Google that info.

you can ask the pharmacist; they know about these things often better than doctors.

I take naltrexone daily in pill form as one tool to keep me sober. I use it to cut down on my cravings and it has worked for me, along with a program of recovery. I have no side effects. Some people use it in what’s called the Sinclair Method whereby they take it an hour before they plan to drink to manage their consumption. It blunts the reward centers in the brain that respond to alcohol.

I’m an alcoholic, so total sobriety is how I use it.

There is also a monthly injection of naltrexone you can get, called vivitrol. I think some choose that so they don’t have a daily option to not take the meds.

Definitely discuss options with your GP. Also, be aware that some GPs aren’t experts on addiction medicine. You may need to see a specialist for addiction medication. I did. Acamprosate is another medication. Good luck.

I’m a bit confused cos in another thread you’re already using naltrexone in a specific way, on advice of your wife?

Binge drinkingI have been drinking since I was 23 now I am 40,when my wife restricts me I tend to get and hide bottles in car trunk or on side yard, sometimes in washroom too, in a hurry to drink without her notice I complete a Mickey (375 ml) bottle bottoms up, After I came to this group I started talking open with her explaining my problem, she now understands it’s a disease and I am not doing for social life or fun.. she told me to keep a bottle at home openly and drink 1 drink slowly for an hour till I get my Naltrexone working to stop receptors
talk to your family or close friends about the problem without shy, may be their help is much required for alcoholic to quit
I do not recommend you or anyone else use it in that way.

just a reminder to everyone - ideas like TSM using naltrexone or other meds to moderate drinking are off topic here @ SR. There are other websites and forums dedicated to these methods.
