7 1/2 weeks sober, feeling better but still dizzy

So my anxiety, insomnia and appetite are better. I am becoming more productive. But I have had this strange motion sickness that is 24/7 since late December(my last drink was December 16th, 2020). The only time it gets better is when I am riding in the car. I have had a CT scan of my brain as well as an MRI(all normal), an ENT says it is not vertigo, also had inner ear tests that were negative. Some doctors think the "dizziness" is anxiety driven or possibly my central nervous system still adjusting to not having alcohol suppress it for decades. I think it has nothing to do my sobriety. It may in fact be this rare syndrome called Disembarkment Syndrome but I have not traveled on a boat, train or airplane in more than a year. Anyone out there have this sensation after quitting? It feels like I am on a ship, rocking and sometimes like I am being pushed or pulled. It gets better if I lie down but then I feel like I am floating. It is very disconcerting!

I think it's your CNS readjusting. I'm not a doctor, my experience only.

I've experienced it not with alcohol, but with benzos, who share same gaba receptors as alcohol.

The benzo stuff has lasted a really long time (improving), but have read alcohol is a more short lived experience.

Felt like I was on a boat, the floor undulating.

Whatever the case, our brains re-regulate, and it eventually goes away. Just got to hang in. It will get better.

Good you have seen doctors so as to put your mind at ease.

You sharing about your dizziness and having all those test
done and everything coming back negative was similar to
what happened to me 2 yrs ago.

I still don't know for certain what may have caused my dizziness,
but I may have a clue. First, I was wearing earplugs at night to cancel
any kind of noise that would interfere with my sleeping. Then I started
having pain in my gum line which test were done and they couldnt
find any reason why I was experiencing this pain.

Maybe it was from the crunchy, hard Dorito chips i was eating at
that time. They just didnt know.

Sooooo, i was put on some antibiotics which cleared up any
kind of infection there may have been lurking. Then, the pain
came and went, some dizziness and then.....

a light bulb went off in my head.

I got it I think.

See, I work in my backyard gardens everyday all day just
about with every seasonal change there is. I never had allergies
to worry about with an occassional sniffle.

So, I thought, maybe what Im experiencing had to do with
my ears, throat and nose and all those glands in and around
those areas. The nose drips and flows to the throat. The ears
down to the neck and teeth, gums. throat...all that works together
and can be infect all at one time or one or the other.

ENT....Ears, nose and throat.

Sinuses drain and can affect the gum line or nerves.

So that is where I decided to watch myself when working
outside around all my beautiful flowers, working with garden
soil, and everything outside and if i feel sniffles coming on
I think allergy and take precautions.

As many times I went to the dentist and had my vision tested
all for my dizziness, not one doctor mentioned allergies.

Ever since i made myself aware that it could be allergies then
I havent had anymore dizzy spells or extreme pain in my gum
line.

Sorry you are still suffering with this. Have any of the doctors you’ve consulted suggested treatments at all?

Is it really dizzy or is it a sense of general off balance feeling. I call it spatial disorientation or just poor balance.

For example, I couldn't stand on one foot for more than a few seconds. I had a lot of trouble walking on uneven surfaces when there was low light.

Dizziness, to me, is what happens when a person twirls around and around and then stops.

I had trouble walking up grand stands or walking down stairs if there was no hand rail. I still do, but not as bad.

Pretty much brain damage from drinking. Like I have always said, I don't think it gets better, but I got used to it.

I have been told to be honest about it with my Dr. but, I don't want to get some medication that may not work.

Disclaimer: That being said, the correct answer may may may may very well be see a Dr. I don't want you to get hurt because you fell based on my experience/attitude/decision.

My balance has improved and I expect it to continue to get better, as long as I don't relapse.

P.S. when I first quit, I couldn't ride my motorcycle for about 2 years. Now I ride it all the time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
