Question for Long Time Drinkers Like Me
Me - drank for 30 years on and off, mainly on (though I was not a heavy drinker for my first few years). I won't bore you with a drunkalogue.
After 22 weeks sober:
Sleep pattern...fine.
Mental sharpness...pretty good.
Physical fitness...very good, considering my poor lifestyle choices.
However my anxiety can still be quite bad on-and-off. That's the main psychological after-effect I am experiencing.

I started drinking at 15, I remember actually being in a pub in Scotland, UK, ordering pints of cider and lager at 15 years old. My drinking career started then and it took until my early 20's whilst a student at Uni to recognise, deep down, that maybe I had a bit of a problem with alcohol. I got married and fathered a son in my early 30's, burning the candle at both ends, drinking heavily and dealing with the stresses of job, family, relationship mortgage, promotion, etc. and this is when I knew that I needed to stop. It took me until my 40's to stop for any length of time and I lived in a cycle of sobriety/binge before finally giving up for good in my late 40's. I have over 3 years now.
In terms of beneficial effects, I started noticing physical changes at around 6 months, mentally, preparing to face the world sober (and tell people) took longer.
