You decide how you will feel on New Years Day

I don't normally start threads but been thinking for the last couple of days. Today/tonight 31 Dec (and even tomorrow 1 Jan in Scotland) are major drinking days.

Many people will overdo things, regret things and vow to start afresh on 1 Jan and stop drinking. But why not do it now? We don't have to drink tonight. For people thinking of one last hurrah then starting sobriety tomorrow or even breaking a stint of sobriety to have a 'few drinks' on NY Eve maybe think again.

Instead of waking up tomorrow feeling ill full of shame guilt and remorse why not start the year feeling invigorated and free - you will have got through NY Eve sober and will feel fantastic in the morning

Happy New Year everyone

This will be my second sober New Years. Now — I won’t be up at midnight. That’s not changed. I wasn’t making it to midnight as a drinker the last few years anyway. Instead of being passed out by midnight, I will be in my sober sleep, ready to tackle tomorrow hangover free!

We’re trying a Vegan New Years! Cause why not. Got a Vegan turkey, mashed potato’s recipe, and even vegan lime cheesecake. I have sparking grape juice as my special drink.

and yes, I just needed this reminder. Dinner didn't turn out like I was planning all day and anxiety rushing, revisiting and reminding myself about the outcome of my choices and actions tonight

Doing a teacher training assignment 🙂

But as a drinker, I never made an effort at New Years anyway, and even then couldn’t understand the need to drink excessively that night.

I posted a thread very similar last year and I'll say it now: 2 years ago today I was at the 60 day mark. It was tough going into NYE and I secluded myself at home contemplating going out and "just starting over tomorrow". I mean it was NYE right? How easy it would be to just start over on the new year. But ultimately, I used what little 60 day tools I had and made the conscious decision to not drink. I posted here and received some of the best advice I have gained thus far in sobriety from a fellow member. I ended up hanging out socially for just the right amount of time (45min) into the new year at midnight with the right friends who respected my decision to not drink. The next day I started the new year with 61 days sober instead of another day 1. I am forever grateful to the moment that provided me with a strength I didn't know was there to get me through a tough decision. Today I am 792 days sober. Stay motivated my friends! You got this.

Thanks for posting this RAL. The sodden nature of a traditional New Years Eve does give sober folks a moment to ponder.

I like the idea of getting a head start on your new year's resolutions. How often in life do you really get a head start . . . . not that it is a race but if we believe in anything as artificial and man made as the new year, why not believe in getting a "head start" on a new years resolution.

I have been doing lots of pushups today in the hopes of starting the new year with some sore muscles rather than a sore head.

I'm still a few hours out on New Years as I'm in the Western US.
