Would I want to drink ...After all this time sober? Weekenders 30 October-02 November 2020

If this is your first weekend sober, or many, come join us for support and chat...as we know the weekends can be a struggle sometimes. (We’re here all week too!)

‘Surely.....I’m okay to have a drink now?....After all this time sober’

I thought this the first time I got sober, . I was confident I’d become a sober, sensible person, in check of my thoughts and actions. So surely one or two drinks would be ok.

..I had thoughts that I was a ‘normie’ drinker..

..I was an adult after all and I’d proven I could do it!..

If you’ve had these thoughts and perhaps forgotten why you decided to stop drinking, please re-think your thoughts.

Remember why you want to stop or have stopped already..... I could write a story of why I did and I think, perhaps you could too?

Thanks Mags, a very timely reminder for me..... the AV has been on at me incessantly about it being ok to have a couple of drinks now. I KNOW this isn’t true. It’s not ok, and will never be ok, because it won’t stop at a couple. I need to keep reminding myself why I stopped drinking. How awful it really was. Because we tend to let ourselves forget the bad bits. And we have to remember all of the bad bits. The consequences, the hangovers, the awfulness that it really was.

So I’m in for a sober weekend!

And Shotgun!

hah - that sounds familiar Mags. I picked up after six years sober - just two drinks the first time - & it took me another eight years to quit again.

Happy nearly-Halloween

Two drinks are of no interest to me at all, that's why I know I can't drink.

For me, two drinks would wake the dragon up.....and we need to keep him asleep!

I have to say, GPs and in my experience counsellors don’t give out the message that an alcoholic/dependent/heavy drinker can’t drink ever again.

If you break your leg, you can run again once it’s healed. If you successfully lose a load of weight, you can have that chocolate bar every now and then. But none of that applies with alcohol. You have to stop for life, and sadly that message isn’t out there yet.

Andyh, have you quit now, if I may ask?

Sorry to pry, but the honesty and bravery of posters like yourself teaches newcomers like me that sobriety must be a permanent thing. I’d assumed previously that I’d be able to have the occasional beer, but now I know the truth.

Thanks Mags!

Wishing everyone an upbeat and safe weekend!

I decided to get the big guy some little friends...

I was concerned at first that he'd eat them, on the contrary, he seems to enjoy their company.

Besides, they're way too small for his monstrous appetite.

that's fine, it's not prying. I have 3+ years abstinence now. I don't have any illusions that I can moderate - & like Kaily says, in truth it's not just a couple of drinks that I would want. & anyway, I quite like my life now & any small upside of drinking is far, far outweighed by the downsides.

Phew! Very glad to hear that, Andyh. Sounds like you’re doing great now.

Thanks for the honesty in posting. As I say, it definitely helps the likes of me who are relatively new to this.

Thanks mags for this thread. I can never drink again and I'm so grateful to be able to come here first thing in the morning and feel such support.

When I first quit in January, I assumed that I would eventually be able to resume a moderated amount of drinking. Thanks to those willing to share about their history with that here, it soon became evident that this would not be the case. So many countless attempts at moderation all met with failure.

IN!

Thanks Mags!

Thanks too Andy for the reminder not to let my guard down, I hit six years at the end of December.

Alice is back! It's that time of the year.

More cowbell!

We all did, and to be fair, doctors seem reluctant to give the message that alcoholics don’t get “cured” and must stay sober for life. Maybe doctors have tried to say this but were met with arguments and disdain. There’s only so much a doctor can do I guess.

Well done to you, city, for quitting and knowing the score.

thanks Mags.

I quit drinking for many years...nearly 18. One day I had a glass of something. No reason, every reason. It was fine at first and I did drink moderately for a while. Sort of. Until I didn't. It doesn't get better.

Not going back there. I don't need to touch that fire again.

Lunar, the most recent Seattle Zoo Blog will be of interest to you!! (It's topical!! Halloween-ish even.) It's interesting.
