Currently 1:30 am Sunday where I am and 4:00pm was last drink and no withdrawals, sweating etc, so far. If I can I won't drink today and ditch the tapering plan. If I do drink later today I must, must, must keep it at no more one bottle of wine (750 ml, 12% abv).

Don't drink later today SOH. If you are skating through typical withdrawal symptoms like sweating, etc., why test that? Do the easy thing and stay sober. Perhaps you've sweated your last drunk sweat??? Here's hoping for you.

You are right. I never get the real bad stuff like seizures or even tremors, it's just profuse sweating, anxiety and cravings. If I get the sweating I'll go on this thread. I'm just going to man up. My last drink was 1st August 2020 at approx 4:00 pm. No more excuses. I don't recommend people do what I'm doing without librium, by the way, I think it's important to be clear on that.

The thing about keeping hydrated that people mention, the last 10 years (one third) of my drinking 'career', I had gotten into the habit of keeping hydrated as a matter of routine in any case. Because most of my drinking was at home, i.e., not drinking socially so much, this was easy. I had gotten into the habit of buying a 2 litre bottle of water with my booze. When I got sober before for 10 months some days I was drinking 4 litres of water a day. There was probably an issue going on with substitution and possibly drinking even more water helped with cravings but at least I was totally abstinent from alcohol. I think I am capable of becoming addicted to anything, lol.

People, places and things. As I say, I haven't been a pub person in recent years (though I was in my twenties and early thirties), so staying out of pubs is easy, it's become my routine. Really it's just the booze that has to stop. Easy peasy, right?

You’ll be done with day one soon enough then, SOH! And you feel so much better. I hope you’re getting some sleep now.

I went for a nap in the afternoon and didn't wake up until 10pm, that's why I am awake now. My sleeping pattern needs to normalise but that will come in time.

I am doing what I should have been over the last few weeks. In the hospital they had a 'Goal-setting and change management' group where they recommended (particularly for weekends) goal setting under a format where we set our goals in three areas. I'm going to share it here. I find it a very useful format and it may benefit others.

Recovery oriented goals
These might include items such as:
- Participating in support group (AA, Lifering, Smart recovery) meetings
- Posting on the sober recovery website
- Maintaining contacts with other recovering alcoholics and addicts
- If we can, help with emotional moral practical support for other struggling alcoholics, while ensuring that we put our own recovery first. For me this is whatsapping with my friends from rehab.

Practical/Functional goals
- Contacts with family
- Following up on emails
- Work related matters
- Financial matters
- Domestic/housekeeping

Recreational/fun goals
- Exercise - running, jogging, walking, cycling
- Enjoying nature
- Painting, artistic endeavours, playing or listening to music
- Pilates, yoga and similar

Riversong, I hope today will be your new beginning.

SOH, I appreciate you sharing the goal setting. Lots of really practical stuff which gets cut off when we’re drinking. Thanks and I hope today goes well for you.

Erratic, have a good day at work.

Today will be a relaxing day with church this morning then baseball game in the afternoon. Any down time will be for napping or walking. That’s all I can handle right now!

i‘ll be sure to stay close to SR and check in later. The past few Sundays I have driven down by the river and gone out for walks alone in the evening (claiming me time) Ended up spending more time drinking than walking. I look forward to the day I can trust myself to go enjoy the beauty of nature while actually getting the exercise I need.

Enjoy the day.
