Weekends Past

If this weekend was like others

I’d not know much of it,

I’d be blotto, comatose

And mostly, degenerate.

~~~
If this weekend was like others
Amidst the empty bottles,
An itch that can’t be scratched,
Then one more drink as I crash horizontal.
~~~

If this weekend was like others

There’d be regrets and memory loss,

Broken promises of ‘this is the last’

Whilst amid much crapulousness

~~~
If this weekend was like others
But wait! I broke the mould,
I refused my ache for alcohol
How will my sober life unfold?
~~~

Many sober weekends (and weekdays) on,

Seven years nearly, it will be

Since I chose the sober path,

Regrets? Not one, I reply happily.

~~~
A poem by Mags
thanks Mags. bravo! splendid use of crapulousness. :D
lunar 05-28-2020 02:00 AM
Thanks, Mags!
I'm in.
I had to look up that word:
crapulent
(ˈkræpjʊlənt) or
crapulous
adj
1. given to or resulting from intemperance
2. suffering from intemperance; drunken
[C18: from Late Latin crāpulentus drunk, from Latin crāpula, from Greek kraipalē drunkenness, headache resulting therefrom]
ˈcrapulence n
ˈcrapulently, ˈcrapulously adv
ˈcrapulousness, crapulosity n
I had 4 years of Latin in high school, but can't remember that one...
Bravo!
*Jobu Episode 4 will make it's debut later on*
Thanks Mags, shotgun!
Mags1 05-28-2020 02:15 AM
Congratulations on shotgun Reid. :)
lunar, Andy, crapulousness sums up my life was when drinking. But the Rose-coloured glasses kidded me most of the time.
looking forward to seeing Jobu.
Weather is really warm here now (well for Ireland) It's a Bank Holiday too the weekend. My old Treatment Centre is reopening in the next few week so I can go
back there again for groups, etc. I'm very sick of the online meetings, etc now- I'm looking at computer 8 hours a day with work so anymore in the evening is overkill.
We had a online sales meeting the other day and my company is 25% up on revenue from this time last year. It's not surprising given the business I'm in.
But we were also told no customer visits for many, many months yet so working from home indefinitely which I have mixed feelings over.....
Mags1 05-28-2020 03:06 AM
It’s warm here in the UK too.
it’s good your company is up in revenue, I know a lot of the food outlets are so much busier. Don’t forget to give your eyes a rest Reid, if you’re on your PC a big part of the day.
Thanks Mags :)
I spent many a crapulental year - no more :)
Thanks for the thread and poem Mags.
A Crapulous Mum
As I crashed through the door
I fell to the floor
There I lay to my daughters dismay
Then later that day I was unable to play
And somehow I thought that was okay
That is my 2 minute attempt at poetry. :)
MLD51 05-28-2020 06:28 AM
I'm in!
Brilliant poem, Mags. I'll read again later. Kaily, yours is mighty fine as well!
I'm busy busy with work stuff today. I got recruited to help with new student online registration at the university (not exactly in my job description, but I have no choice) and we have a practice run today. First time ever attempting to do this online - usually the kids come to campus and talk to professors one-on-one and get help picking their classes. I'm not a professor, I'll be helping sort of behind the scenes. I should not have to have any contact with actual students, which is good.
Off to get started with that - I'll check in later.
Mags1 05-28-2020 06:36 AM
Marty, sounds interesting helping the new students to registrate. :)
Kaily that’s great!
Forwards 05-28-2020 07:05 AM
Thanks Mags - I enjoyed at the poem, good stuff...
Steady progress here. My potential new employer has finally got back to me (after 10 weeks of Covid caused chaos) with a proposed start date in a month's time. The job is local, paid well enough and stable. This is something I've not been at all used to at all as a freelancer. I'm very much aware that this opportunity has only arisen with sobriety, the recovery work, study and reference projects that I have completed over the last 17 months. Even if this falls through, I will be grateful.
So, I wonder who will be joining us this summer weekend. It would be nice to see some newcomers here - if you're reading don't be shy. We weekenders are a friendly bunch!
Bye for now. Warm wishes to all. Forwards.
Jōbū, Episode 4
Kaily 05-28-2020 08:08 AM
Bigger and bigger he gets. A fine specimen. I think maybe some Elvis for episode 5?
saoutchik 05-28-2020 09:21 AM
Mags the magnificent. That was excellent Mags, thank you. I thought crapulousness must, in some way, be connected to this fella but as is so often the case I am mistaken.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Crapper
In his later years Pavarotti was more or less the same shape as Jobu.
SoberLeigh 05-28-2020 09:51 AM
Jobu is most certainly intent, lunar. Any performer would be pleased to have such a captivated audience.
Mags the Magnificent, indeed! Thank you.
Sao, thank you; great information. Despite his name, modern humans owe him many thanks.
Happy for your good news, Forwards.
:wave:and love to all.
Prayers for Minneapolis - peace, and an end to violence and racism in this country and the world.
MLD51 05-28-2020 11:07 AM
I live close to Minneapolis. My heart is broken. I won't get political, but I wish we as humans in society could solve these very deep issues we have regarding discrimination. And not just regarding race. Marginalized people of all kinds deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
SoberLeigh 05-28-2020 11:42 AM
Totally agree, MLD. Love is stronger than hate, care is more powerful than neglect, giving is absolutely better than receiving. I believe that we can change the world, baby step by baby step; we as a society just need to change our ‘vision’ and priorities in life and act with compassion and kindness. Goodness has a ripple effect.
there once was a man from Nantucket*
who drank beer and wine by the bucket
but now there isn't a day
he doesn't to himself say
he's much happier to have given'd up it
* may have been London
