Hi, I'm glad you're feeling a bit better now - if you are displaying such neurological symptoms during withdrawal they will get worse if there are others, so I really hope you manage to quit because it gets really dangerous. I'm a year sober and even now if I don't take my B12 and thiamine my feet and ankles go numb and tingly, I guess I've done permanent damage. So many worry about liver damage with alcohol but the damage to the nervous system is just as lethal, if not more.

That's true Daisy. I've reading up a lot about that exact thing of late.

I'm guess my biggest mission needs to be when I finally get through the physical aspects re withdrawal over the next week it's has to to be that I work my ass off so that I'm not back here in a few weeks saying, "****, back to square one again!".

It's been great having support like this, so thank you.

Hey Andrew,

Happy to hear you are feeling better! Librium is awesome, When I was given it in the ER they would only dose me up and make me go and see an alcohol specialist first thing the next day to get more. Not sure about Ireland but in England we can get outpatient addiction treatment through the nhs.
did they give you h the yellow drip?
hopefully the hallucinations have calmed down as well. Very unpleasant and scary,

onwards and upwards! My experience with all this is when I go get cravings I try to focus on the good stuff I have but also really remember these negative experiences. Withdrawals usually start to get worse each time you stop drinking. But you are alive and sounds like you are well so now just time to focus on recovery 😊

how did you go with your pain meds?

Thanks Buttery,

Yeah, the doc said there is no problem taking them alongside librium, shouldn't effect withdrawals, but said not to take to many right now... I guess because I'd be vunerable to replacing alcohol with codiene just to make me feel a bit better. Haven't really been taking them, knee isn't too bad.

Hi Andrew--I am so glad you decided to go to the ER and are feeling better on day 4. I tried to do it without help and suffered from alcoholic hallucinosis within 12 hours--so glad you were smarter than I was. Regarding peripheral neuropathy, I had it in my hands and feet and it became pronounced after I'd stopped; it was awful, kind of a cold, numb pain that made it hurt to walk. I'm a musician, so numb painful fingers were very frightening to me. However, within 6 months of getting sober, the neuropathies had gone away, as well as pains near my liver and an awful case of rosacea. Our bodies are amazingly resilient, but we need to give them sustained sobriety so they can heal. Wishing you the best with your knee and your sobriety.

Glad you’re feeling much better Andrew. Those first few days are horrible.

It sounds like day 4 was a lot more bearable. Glad to hear you slept.

I’ve had those body jerks that you and Buttery described.

Stay well! Stick with us.

Keep in touch.

None of us has to endure those first few days of hellish suffering again if we don’t pick up a drink.

For me the old adage: “If nothing changes; nothing changes.” was a big sticking point for quite a while.

I knew the way of fear, at the time, not courage. I would curse my HP for letting this happen, yet again.

When I got tired enough of the cycle, I began to seek change. I reached out (SR as well). I began sharing openly.
Started paying attention to my heart, not my head. Abandoned some of the old crappy resentments that were keeping me in a rut.
‘Reached out to some old friends. I had to accept myself as someone needing help. Cards on the table, so to speak.

Change requires some effort and willingness, also I had to squeeze through some discomfort in order to break through to the other side.

I experience more calm and peace now than ever.

Stay well, so glad you posted.

Hi guys,

Well, things are going well. Made it to the week mark yesterday so a small milestone. No real cravings last few days. Staying at parents for a few days which is a good grounding to keep on the straight and narrow for what will be a very sunny bank holiday weekend ahead here.

Most of symptoms have abated and feeling pretty healthy. My mind is still a bit thorny and racing about various different things, but it is clearing.

Re the prescription of Librium I received, I didn't really need to keep to the dosage that the doctor prescribed. The symptoms sort of cleared up pretty quickly a couple of days ago, so I just take about 20mg before bedtime just to help with sleep, and it's worked well. I haven't needed to take them during the day.

When I think of how I felt seven days ago it's really a world of difference. So anybody out there struggling through first few days of withdrawal, stuck with it, don't pick up, and it will pass, it always does, I know from numerous experiences

For me, it's now about maintaining sobriety and not falling into old habits. If folk out there have any advice for me heading into week 2, please do let me know. I feel strong about it but I have such a long history of falling again when I start to feel better.

Hope everybody is well

Andrew.

Congrats on a week Andrew. My advice is simply to do everything in your power not to drink again. Post here first, find as much support as you can and stay away from slippery situations until you find your sober muscles. Cherish your recovery - guard it, protect it and nourish it.

You can do it

welcome Alexander
I think a consultation with your doctor is probably the best first step you can make?
