1 year sober

I'm 1 year and 2 days sober. After what was 15 years of progressively worsening alcoholism, I feel lucky to finally have managed a full year with zero alcohol, not a sip.

I got to the point of drinking 2 to 4 litres of wine every night. I honestly thought I'd never be able to quit. It took many failed attempts. I think for me it was the failed attempts that led to finally realising that the ONLY was to quit was cold turkey and developing a mindset that unless I just pushed through the Craving it would never happen.

The first few nights were very hard. Sitting on the end of my bed, riding the cravings out. It took probably 2 weeks before I felt them slowly fade, but after that it became so much easier.

As someone who felt like they'd never be free, I can say that it does get easier and now, even though I get the odd craving, it's gone quickly. The thought of alcohol is now mostly that it's the last thing I'd want.

Anyway, just though this share.

Congratulations on 1 year (actually 1 year and 2 days)!! I like how you said you had to develop a mindset to do this. It's what I had to do. Again, congratulations.

Awesome heartfelt post. Also loved the inspiring words of staying strong and to keep trying even when you think it won't work out.

Congratulations A15, fantastic!

I too had a succession of failures. They did help me into doing the right thing (though it would have been better to have found "the right thing" sooner)
