Horses for Courses - Weekender 28 February- 02 March 2020
to the Weekenders
Working and Observing for some years on the Racecourses around Britain, I learnt that there are some courses that horses prefer more than others and succeed on these courses.
Left Hand or Right Hand courses were important. Some galloped perfectly around one course to then perform badly at another.
At a race meeting in Doncaster I remember there was much expectation and anticipation for the favourite to win a particular race.
I was gobsmacked. Didn’t they realise the ground was all wrong for this horse, it hated soft ground!
It lost, in fact the horse pulled up because it couldn’t gallop in the soft.
Strange that what is good, for example, soft ground(going), right-handed courses, for one horse can be the failure of another horse.
Pretty much like our recovery I think!
What works for me may not work for you and vice-versa.
Finding your ‘right’ ground and ‘right’ course makes all the difference between keeping on our sober course or pulling up at a hurdle along the way.
If this is your first weekend sober, or many, come join us for support and chat...as we know the weekends can be a struggle sometimes.
(Psst. We’re not just here to talk about the good stuff, if you’re struggling.....shout out).
(We’re here all week too!)

Morning all.
Hope you achieve your milestones with work jr. I need to hit some milestones in preparing my tax return today.
Interesting analogy mags. We had horses when I was young, but they were 1/2 wild and it was more like a rodeo than a horse race. The British style horseracing used to come on tv but I haven't seen it the last few years. We go to friends house to watch the running of the Kentucky Derby every year, which I'm sure would be considered a redneck affair compared to The Derby at Epsom Downs. The hats the women wear. $1,000 mint juleps. That guy that looks like Rick Flair has the winning horse every year it seems. Our friends make mint juleps for the race also, and I usually bring the woodford reserve. No woodford reserve for me this year.
Great day all.

I'm in! Thanks, Mags.
I definitely had to find the "right" ground for my recovery. And it doesn't look quite like anyone else's. Whatever works...
Happy that the week is nearly over. I have been in a rotten mood all week, and things have not gone well. I was trying to figure out if my rotten mood made things just seem bad, when they actually are not, but no. Things really are not great at work or elsewhere. Sometimes it's just like that. It'll pass. I'm hoping to be able to get out walking on Sunday. It's supposed to be mid-40's, which for us seems practically like summer at this time of year. I need some exercise and fresh air.
Happy birthday, freedomfries. 29 is so young... so much life left. Do it sober! I sure wish I had quit when I was that age. I waited until I was 51.

Love the intro again Mags, you must know quite a lot about horse racing, you must have won a few bets in those days!
Ready here for another sober weekend.
Happy Birthday tomorrow Freedomfries. 29, Wow, poor you, I can't imagine ever being that old!!!

IN!
Thanks Mags, it is always useful to remind people that there are a myriad of pathways to getting sober and that if you come off the path then you just need to try a different one.
Happy Birthday freedomfries (but please - 29 "so old!)
I am away on business so a bit pushed for time but have decided to travel home on Saturday in order to have a day and a bit in the Scottish Highlands without work getting in the way.It is snowing here.
I accidentally stumbled on Eilean Donan Castle which features in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Thank you, Mags.
Great intro.
I used to do horseback riding and when I was learning jumping the trainer told me "Don't look at the hurdle, look beyond it".
It's a great metaphor for life too - not to focus too much on the obstacle.
It's quite time for me to practice it because I am still between the rock and the hard place.
Have a great day/night.
See you.
