Music/lyrics that have helped?

Hi, I'm two days sober and beginning day three with hope and confidence. I (and we) can do this.

What are some songs and lyrics that people have found helpful? Music has always been therapeutic for me, and I've found it a welcome distraction while trying to quit drinking. In addition, I have found some song lyrics and an excellent youtube video that I would like to share with others battling this addiction.

My recent favorite, daily required listening, is a song by the band Nahko and Medicine for the People and the song is called Budding Trees.

Following are my favorite lines from the song; the chorus. It has been my mantra recently. I'm aware he's not specifically referencing alcoholism, but more like God, Nature, some higher power, etc. However, if you'll read these lines, I think you'll find in them a kind of "prayer," not necessarily religious, to help yourself overcome your urges. Enjoy!

"So, tap me out, and tap me into you.
Heal my brain, and my body too.
Balance my chemistry,
Hydrate these cells,
Because the body talks;
And meditation helps."

Please, please, watch the YouTube music video. It is uplifting, inspiring, and euphoric.

(I guess I can't post links yet, as I've only posted nine times... Google "Nahko Budding Trees" and you'll find the video).

I understand if this isn't your taste in music; feel free to ignore this post, and/or post your own favorite "recovery songs."

Have a great day.

I remember when detoxing at home I kept looping Imagine Dragons "Whatever it takes" in my head, I needed that determined feeling when it started getting rough

The song lyric in my signature is my go to, Reckless Love, by Cory Asbury. The story behind it is from the Bible... I know, not for everyone. I also love Lauren Daigle’s You Say.

I Am Here by Pink

I am here, I am here
I've already seen the bottom, so there's nothing to fear

May the light be upon me
May I feel in my bones that I am enough
I can make anywhere home
My fingers are clenched, my stomach's in knots
My heart it is racing, but afraid I am not
Afraid I am not

A lot of the times that I was drinking in the last few years, I would listen to gospel music on YouTube.

So much mainstream music includes some reference to drinking.

I listen to talk radio sometimes but most of that is politically oriented, which has been a stress factor that reinforced the cycle of drinking.

The last couple of weeks I've been youtubing old comedy routines while driving, like larry the cable guy.

Music was instrumental ( ) in my healing. I love getting new songs from other people. So many of them helped me find my way out. It's still my goto. I'm convinced...God is a DJ. This is my church. This is where I heal my hurts.

Incidentally Pink has a song by the same title.

The recovery songs I like are a little more direct and perhaps less spiritual.

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true, yeah
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh, how I want to be free, baby
Oh, how I want to be free
Oh, how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own

So baby can't you see
I've got to break free
I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I've made a Spotify playlist with all of the songs I could find from the thread above, I'll give it a listen the next time I'm craving that drink. Stay strong, everyone.

I find delta binaural beats soothing.

There are a bunch of good ones you can listen to on YouTube.

You will need to put on headphones / earbuds though.

'Cleanse Song' by Bright Eyes

'Don't forget what you've learned
All you give is returned
And if life seems absurd
What you need is some laughter
And a season to sleep
And a place to get clean
Maybe Los Angeles
Somewhere no one's expecting

On a detox walk
Over Glendale Park
Over sidewalk chalk
Some rope read "start over"'

Joe Walsh's One Day At a Time

"One Day At A Time"

Well you know,
I was always the first to arrive at the party, ooh!
And the last to leave the scene of the crime
Well it started with a couple of beers,
And it went I dont know how many years,
Like a runaway train headed for the end of the line.

Well I finally got around to admit that I might have a problem.
But I thought it was just too damn big of a mountain to climb.
Well I got down on my knees and said 'Hey!' (la la la)
'I just cant go on livin' this way!' (la la la)

Guess I have to learn to live my life one day at a time.
Oh ya! One day at a time!
Oh ya! One day at a time!

Oh ya! One day at a time!
Oh ya! One day at a time!

Well I finally got around to admit that I was a problem.
When I used to put the blame on everybody's shoulders but mine.
All the friends I used to run with are gone, (la la la)
Lord, I hadn't planned on livin' this long. (la la la)

I have to learn to live my life one day at a time!

It was something it was too blind to see,
I got help from something greater than me...
And I have to learn to live my life one day at a time!

Bon Iver (Acapella) live at the Sydney Opera house has helped me get through these first few days (I'm on day four, withdrawal and all).

The lyrics really hit me hard. This music told me a story of how I have resisted a Higher Power my entire life, and the pain, fear, and anger that is inevitably part of the human experience. And when the end arrives, the Higher Power, by whatever name, can offer me safety.

But holding on to you means letting go of pain
Means letting go of tears
Means letting go of rain
Holding on to you, ha
Means letting sorrows heal
Means letting go of what's not real, yeah
Holding on to you, yeah, woo-hoo!

(I May Be)Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. Not sure of the exact title.
I just love the part where he sings : well, bless your soul haha ... you think you’re in control. I’m terrible with the exact words here. Anyway, this Always makes me smile and reminds me in a excellent way.

It’s not a song, but boy, repeating the “Serenity Prayer” (silently) is a Go-To saver in a million situations in my life.

Thank you, Cityboy. After reading many of your posts and replies to my own, I feel that you and I have a lot in common. I am a Christian and my faith has helped me immensely in the previous years, not just with attempting sobriety, but life in general; I've never thought thought about gospel music on YouTube. I agree about political talk-radio; stress-inducing. And I am a big fan of stand-up comedy, laughing always takes my mind off things and serves as a welcome distraction. Anyway, thanks again, and keep it up. Have a great day.

Excellent suggestion, Dee. Thanks. I've never heard this song and I love it now, definitely in my daily-listening playlist.
