$1,014 saved in 32 days

My trusty app says I’m rich! It’s amazing how little I cared day by day with how much I was spending on booze. Over the long term, it sure adds up quick. My banker wife would tell me to put it all in my 401k. I know she’s right but I am going to treat myself with my first month of sobriety . Happy weekend everyone!

I hear that. I chased bad stressful jobs for a good paycheck. Luckily I am very simple and don’t have expensive tastes. The money I “earned” from being sober for a month beats any paycheck

Good for you. In my case I have not done a tally as to how much I saved. I do know my bills are being paid . and now if I want to buy something I just do. 259 days ago nothing was going to interfere with my booze budget. Sad right? One day at a time . ✌

$70,248.

It's probably way more, because I based it on one fifth per day at 1996 prices. In addition, I was spending a lot of time in bars, while drinking that fifth at home and I can't remember how much that cost me each night. Trips to the liquor store and bars cost too. The calculation could be 1/3 of what I've actually saved.

Same. This is just an estimate of what I drank at home. Impossible to calculate all the secondary costs. At least double.

Yesterday I figured that I've been spending $2-3 grand a year just for the normal after work beer. That doesn't count the extra $12 bottle of wine here and there, the glasses of draught with dinner, the bottle picked up on the way to friends house, etc etc. I've thought about it before, along with other reasons to put it down, but in the end it always came back to "$15 and forget about the daily stresses, the work, the PITA customer, and feel better until tomorrow". But man, $3,000 would pick up a really nice precision rifle, pay for a modest family trip, or go good in the IRA.

The money is an added benefit to the priceless quality of life.

My whole world is better.

What is the price of a good relationship with my wife and son.

If I lost my wife, divorce, it would cost me millions.

Don't want that.

Thanks.

I put the money I saved into my retirement accounts. Over the past ~ 10 years, with compounding, I’m sure that has added up to a decent amount.

What’s even better then that, I’m much healthier now so I can actually enjoy my recent retirement.

Congrats! I will be upping my 401k investment for sure. I used to think there was no point to it because I wouldn’t be healthy enough to enjoy it anyway. Or even worse, too dead to enjoy it. I have managed to build a good start on my retirement funds though. There were a couple brain cells still functioning when I was drinking apparently.

Don't forget to include your wife in the little spend up.

She's put up with a lot till now.
