Horrible Story from Rehab
I preface this post with the acknowledgment “Judge not, lest ur be judged.” Having said that, I got some heartbreaking news this morning. A good friend of mine from rehab texted me this morning on his way to the airport (he got out this am) with an awful story.
Among the folks I met in rehab was a pretty, bubbly 24 y/o young lady, we will call her ANNA (not her real name). This was her 4th go round at rehab. She was both an alcoholic and drug user. Yesterday, she did a “coin out”, celebrating her near successful completion of the program — albeit she was set to discharge Friday.
Also among the folks was a 21 y/o young man, we will call him Martin (again, not his real name) who was always near an emotional meltdown, but seemed committed to getting clean.
i learned this morning that he and Anna snuck out of rehab with Rehab employees and got drunk as hell, and smoked weed. They both blew .04s and dirty pee.
Addiction is a MF’er. SMH.

That’s why I did a lot of research on the rehab I went to as heard many stories of some whose employees shouldn’t be within a mile of an addict! There was a guy at my rehab who was in a bad way and had to leave early, he was found dead a couple of months later with a needle in his arm in a grotty hotel in Cambodia, left behind a daughter. Tragic x

I am sure that many areas of the health care profession do not train all of the people who work in that profession about the position of trust that they are in and how much harm they can do. When my ornery naughty Grandpa passed away years ago from lung cancer, in his last few weeks he talked a few of the hospital cleaning staff into sneaking him cigarettes. Unforgivable when you are dealing with a vulnerable population.

Ugh. At the rehab facility I went to, most the counselors were ex substance abusers as well. I’m guessing the patients weren’t allowed their own vehicles there either. The idea of the staff driving them off to drink somewhere is just crazy.

Pretty good example that rehab isn't a fix all. It's all up to the person if they are at a point that they truly want to change their life. If you are really ready to change than any program will work. I use to thank my sponsor for helping me get sober and he would always say it had nothing to do with him. He was just waiting around to give me some advice once I was ready!
Now rehab can be very helpful in helping you decide to change. My sponsor did go to a good rehab and it did get him on the right path. But like he says, ultimately it was just an expensive Big Book! He could have taken the short cut I did and go to AA meetings and follow the advice of a good sponsor : ).

it is what I thought it would be. Thanks for asking. It is a bit uneasy. But I have been using the tools I learned in rehab to shout down the old habits. No cliche — I am taking it minute to minute building new habits. But I am thrilled to be sober. It is exhilarating to feel like I have the strength and support to build a new life.
