Tingling in Hands and Feet

Hello there,
I hope everyone is doing well on their recovery journey. I am new to the forum and posted a couple of weeks ago about my BP readings. I have since lost more weight an additional 7 pounds and I also am happy to say the readings are better, but am praying they get even better than this as the bottom number is still ranging from 85-90 diastolic. Doctor is pleased with my progress so we are going for the no medication route. I am taking herbs, praying a lot, eating healthy and exercising almost everyday. Something that is bothering though, is that my right hand started tingling a month ago while still drinking. That prompted me to check my BP and stop the drinking and try to get the weight off. Two weeks after I stopped drinking my feet and lower legs started feeling the tingling as well. Now it's been everyday in both right hand and mostly right foot, a little in the left. Doctors don't have a good answer just tell me to keep working out and eating right. I had blood work and my liver enzymes were above normal (not surprised due to drinking), and my glucose was right below the number considered high, but not high. My cholesterol total was below 200, but the triglycerides are higher than normal. I am taking garlic capsules now, every vitamin there is...lol, vitamin E for circulation and selium, drinking turmeric tea which seems to help BP too. Just really concerned about the tingling and wondering did anyone experience this even after they stopped and how long did it last? Did it every go away? I am not sure if it's drinking related or not. Thanks to anyone who replies

I'm glad that you're starting to feel better.

If your doctor has no answers about the tingling, maybe he could refer you to a specialist who could help?

I have that also. If you figure it out please let us know. My doc said maybe a b 12 deficiency? Funny When I drank\drink I never felt a thing. What’s that tell you.

I think it is all just guess work at this point GG and I don't think you want any of us guessing any more than you want Dr. Google diagnosing you. All you are going to get is grim diagnosis, most if not all of which will be inaccurate. We do such a broad spectrum of damage to ourselves when we drink too long and much of it takes a year or more to return to normal I am learning. As long as your docs are pleased with your progress I would try not to worry about it too much and just keep doing what you are doing, which sounds like it is really working well.

my suggestion would be to just forget about it for awhile and try to relax and obviously not drink.. your mind can play all kinds of tricks on you. I myself went all in on the herbs and vitamins when first sober and whether it helped or not I really don't know. what I believe really helped the most was giving it time and it sounds like you're fairly new. I myself do have neuropathy from long term alcoholism and threads come up all the time on here which are almost always invalid from my experience with it. give it time and try not to worry so much. I really do believe you will be fine. running around trying to find answers from specialists will just keep your anxiety rolling

Peripheral Neuropathy. Very well may be a B6 and/or B12 deficiency as said above. Did you have that checked? Talk to your doctor. Many treatments for PN. Unfortunately none helped me with mine (which is due to an autoimmune disease). My feet tingle/burn 24/7 it sucks.

In about March of this year, I too got tingling hands and feet. It was annoying and uncomfortable, but not bad enough to see a doctor. In April, the tingling turned to pain. Bad pain. So I went to my doctor and she did an exam, asked a lot of questions, did a blood test (which came back normal), and suggested I see a neurologist because she suspected it could be peripheral neuropathy.

The neurologist confirmed that suspicion, and for the next six months, I had just about every test imaginable along with numerous blood tests, trying to find the cause. I was prescribed medication for the pain (pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy), which helped considerably. After all the tests, my neurologist said there was no obvious cause, so we'd just treat the symptoms. He said that in about 50% of cases, a cause is never found.

All that to say, if the tingling continues, I would again see my doctor and ask for a referral to a neurologist. The worst thing you can do is just ignore it. I would hate for you to go through the pain I did.

Regardless of what is happening with your peripheral nervous system, there is no scenario where drinking will make it better. Alcohol is toxic to nerve cells and it's a double whammy because it can cause malabsorption issues too.

Thank you everyone for your replies. My prayer is that it will go away and I do still need to check my B6 levels, and other B-levels. I did have the B12 checked already and it is in normal ranges. My Vitamin D is low and so I am now taking Vitamin D3. I want to see a specialist but I also agree with Markinny that worrying has not helped me one bit. Every since I saw my BP high a month ago, every day has been focusing on getting it down, being scared, miserable, sad, feeling guilty I didn't take better care of myself and eat right and excercise, taking all these vitamins trying to get better, scared to take meds because of side effects, the list goes on. Not trying to damper anyones day, just being real that yes getting answers is important, but I almost feel like the tingling was not in the feet until I started freaking out about the BP and the feeling in my hand. I think I need to relax, as I don't want to create anxiety. But I will prob, get a full vitamin blood work done to check all the vitamins and minerals, and from there go to a specialist. Praying all will be well though, get better and I won't need to. If I find anything that has helped I will be sure to post it here for others.

I am still getting weird symptoms after all this clean time. But, the correct answer is see a Dr.

When I finally got checked out, after 2 years clean, I was prescribed 2 bp meds. I stopped taking one of them because it made me feel like a zombie and I hated that. It was hurting my job performance....lol...like booze made it better.

I doubt there is anyone the kield over becuase they quit being a fat drunk. Unless they were super addicted and quit cold Turkey

This is all based on my experience.....but, what do I know.

I am a lucky man that managed to stay clean this long drug free.

Love y'all.

Booze is poison.

Thanks.

Hi GG
There no real way for any of us to answer when it will go away, if ever.

In your case I hope it's temporary

Just a reminder to all - we can share our experience to an extent but we can't diagnose or give medical advice here by our rules.

Basic anxiety and/or alcohol withdrawals can cause the hands/feet tingling.

Hey there, GG. I'm not a medical professional, and we are all different, but I did have serious numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and the end of my drinking days, and for about six months afterward. It was awful, and felt like I was walking on hot coals--I am a musician, and losing the feeling in my fingers was very frightening as well. However, after half a year of sobriety and taking care of myself, the numbness and pain gradually went away, and now--some years later--I have no symptoms. Our bodies are very resilient and can take lots of abuse, but we must not drink in order to get better. Wishing you all the best in sobriety this coming new year.

Hello everyone, just had to chime in here. I've never had a drinking problem but I had a tingling problem, several years back. Mostly my arms, hands, and most annoyingly my face! Sometimes my legs and feet also. I also had headaches and stomach aches and dizziness Sometimes all of these problems at once, or in different combinations. The tingling and dizziness was unnerving to the extent I had to pull over when driving and wait. I'd slap my legs, hands and face, trying to stop or at least reduce the tingling.

I went to the ER one day and was given saline which helped a little but not for long. They could not find any cause. I went to one doctor after another and had test after test, spent a lot of money and all the tests came out fine. This took months.

I was recommended to a neurologist who did a cursory exam and gave me a sample of some antidepressant! I was desperate enough to try it. He said there were no side effects. Within a couple of hours I had severe diarrhea and dizziness. I spent a long time in the restroom at my office holding onto the walls of the stall, trying not to pass out. If I'd been driving when this hit I would've lost control of my car. I later found out this reaction was a common side effect. I threw the pills away.

Before the neurologist my wonderful holistic practitioner had ordered a urine test where I collected urine over 24 hours and then it was sent to a lab. The results came back: I had high levels of metal - mercury I think, and others. I told the neurologist and another doctor about this and they basically disregarded it. The neurologist practically threw the test results on the floor.

I started reading around and discovered that metal toxins could come from disintegrating metal dental fillings, the old amalgam kind. I had seven of these fillings, decades old. The holistic guy agreed. I went to my dentist and yes indeed, two of the fillings were clearly falling apart.

Over a period of months I got all the metal fillings taken out and replaced with porcelain. One tooth needed a crown. One filling literally feel to pieces in my mouth. I was spitting out metal.

Once the metal fillings were gone the symptoms disappeared.

Metal poisoning can produce all sorts of symptoms. If you have any of those silver-colored metal dental fillings it's worth checking it out.

I hope you feel better.

@53500 Thanks for your input. I am too seeing a homeopathic doctor now. She recommended a couple of things and wanted me to get a hair folicle test to check for metal exposure. However, the test is pretty pricey and takes 7 days or so to get back. I am going to ask her about going the urine test route instead. That is probably cheaper and results come back faster as well. I do have several amalgam fillings from 30 years ago that are still there and one does need a crown immediately. I am going to look into it. Thanks again.

I don't have neurological issues, but I do have ulnar nerve problems/irritating thingies. My right arm is bad. I find yoga to help and when the nerve slips or does what it does to get pinched, I do specific exercises for that. Sleep with pillows to stretch out. Over the years, surprise dismounts from horse's backs, forgetting I am not 20 at softball tournaments, wearing heels on ice because I'm too lazy to put on boots, thinking ball hockey would be fun to take up in my late 30s, have left me with a variety of issues, including early onset arthritis in some joints, some weird protruding bones, joints that magically fill with fluids. Again exercise and a diet low in inflammatory foods. I initially did a elimination diet, then moved to keto, sometimes more paleo because I am not big on meat, paleo has more options, but I find since quitting drinking and becoming acquainted with this vessel that carries me, diet and exercise are paramount.
I was able to compete in western games this summer on the local circuit for the first time in years. I never get headaches, my last 2 colds have lasted 2 days and my arthritis is all but gone. I credit it with helping me keep a hernia I was told required surgery in check. Pop it back in, slap my hernia belt on, no pain meds - but I am Canadian so, we are a bit tougher...
Keep close to doctors, keep up exercise, diet that makes sense for you. I don't personally do vitamins, I do teas, some stuff I grow myself.

Please research B12 deficiency, checking your B12 levels alone may not be enough.

Perhaps ask your doctor about pressure socks. They have helped me with tingling toes.
