10 yrs before I quit. In 2006, I called a rehab in CA (an expensive place, which I could have afforded myself at the time, sidenote). I didn't return the call when they got back to me that day.
Sparing all the details, it was 2016 when I reached a life or death prognosis (yr, 18 mo) and I quit cold turkey, and AA saved my life.

I think for me there were a couple of warning signs.
1. Drinking more alcohol got rid of my hangover.
2. Feeling ashamed about how much I drank.
3. Hating myself.
4. Other people commenting on my drinking.
I did a google search and ended up here.
8 years in Feb 2020.
