What Do We Want More Than We Want to Drink?

Happy almost Friday from (cooling down) Miami. Tonight the breeze was blowing, giving the city this wonderful ocean smell and soft, easy light air. Humidity was down for a bit tonight and I really enjoyed being outside, watching the palm trees swaying in the air.
City lights are bright and the sound of people carried through the buildings. There is always something interesting to see; a lively restaurant with salsa music playing, a runner with his lights on crossing the busy street, a lady walking her dogs, the homeless man who always sleeps at the bus stop.
Everything is vibrant, I am seeing it all in high-definition.

I want new eyes more than I want to drink.

Sounds wonderful! Wish I was there. Instead, we bundle up in warm clothes and deal with the snow.

New eyes is a great description of how I feel in recovery. Noticing all the gifts of life and nature that I was shut off to before. Great post.

This is so, so moving. While drinking, I saw nothing. Too busy drinking or thinking about drinking.

Nice outlook. New eyes are way better than eyes wide shut.

I cannot love this any more than I do.

In early sobriety I was continually amazed at how wonderful everything around me in the world looked through sober eyes. I still think about it sometimes, but it's my new normal, so I forget how dull and hazy my whole life was while I was drinking.

I'm not sure what I want more than I want more to drink. I've not thought about this much. When I was drinking, I'm not sure what more I wanted more. When I quit what I wanted more than drink was just not to drink at all. OK, I got that. Now what? Really, I just want to enjoy what I now have. OK, but I've got that too. I'm having a hard time thinking of something. A million bucks? Not really. It would be nice, but I'd give most of it away...

OK, here's a thought. How about if I just want to not want anything? But alas. I've got that too.

When I got sober, it was like going from black and white to Technicolor (a term us older types will remember).

Everything was all of a sudden bright and radiant.

I think that alcohol had dulled my senses so badly that life (and my vision) had become a blur.

And I certainly had no appreciation for beauty.

After spending years of my life living in a neon-lit environment, it was nice to get outside and see some pretty sights.

As an aside, I like south Florida very, very much.

Its culture is something to behold.
